In the Eastern tradition, chrismation shows the unity of the church through the bishop in the continuation of the Apostolic faith, because the Chrism used is presented to the priest by the bishop and ( together with the antimension ) is the symbol of the priest's permission from the bishop to perform the sacraments ( see faculty ).

Furthermore, because some of the previously sanctified Chrism is mixed with the newly sanctified Chrism, there is a belief that the Chrism contains a remnant of, or at least a connection to, the same Chrism which was sanctified by the Apostles in the first century, and thus is a symbol of Apostolic succession.

There was an early legend associated with St. Remigius known as the Legend of the Baptism of Moribund Pagan, according to which a dying pagan asked for baptism at the hands of St. Remigius, but when it was found that there was no Oil of the Catechumens or sacred Chrism available for the proper administration of the baptismal ceremony, St. Remigius ordered two empty vials be placed on an altar and as he prayed before them the two vials miraculously filled respectively with the necessary Oil of the Catechumens and Chrism.

Chrism ( Greek word literally meaning " an anointing "), also called " myrrh " ( myron ), holy anointing oil, or " consecrated oil ", is a consecrated oil used in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Eastern Rite Catholic, Oriental Orthodox, and Old-Catholic churches, as well as some other traditions, including the Assyrian Church of the East, and Nordic-style Lutheran churches, in the administration of certain sacraments and ecclesiastical functions.

It is said that when St. Mark went to Alexandria, he took with him some of the Holy Myron oil made by the Apostles and that he used it in the Sacrament of Chrism, as well as the Patriarchs who succeeded him.

The Chrism used at Chrismation and the Antimension placed on the Holy Table are also said to be consecrated.

Chrism, used as anointing oil, is ( usually scented ) olive oil consecrated by a bishop.

It has been suggested that since in the original form of the legend this would have been the vial containing the Oil of the Catechumens and that the French coronation ordinals prescribe the Oil of the Catechumens, rather than Chrism, for the anointing of queens, it was subsequently used for anointing the queens of France and it is possible that a vial currently identified by some of the Bourbon Legitimists as the Sainte Ampoulle is actually this second vial.

In the Middle East, the Eastern Orthodox Church traditionally uses myrrh-scented oil to perform the sacraments of chrismation and unction, both of which are commonly referred to as " receiving the Chrism ".

Any bishop may consecrate the holy oils, and normally do so every Holy Thursday at a special " Chrism Mass ".

The Chrism Mass, whose texts the Roman Missal now gives under Holy Thursday, may be brought forward to one of these days, to facilitate participation by as many as possible of the clergy of the diocese together with the bishop.

Ordination of bishops, blessing of Holy Chrism, proclamation of feasts, invitation and dismissal of National-ecclesiastical assemblies, issuing decrees concerning the administration of the Armenian Church and establishing dioceses are part of his responsibilities.
