Christa McAuliffe ( September 2, 1948 – January 28, 1986 ) was an American teacher from Concord, New Hampshire, and was one of the seven crew members killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

McAuliffe was known by the name " Christa " from an early age, although in later years she signed her name " S. Christa Corrigan ", and eventually " S. Christa McAuliffe ".

The Christa McAuliffe Planetarium / McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, the Christa Corrigan Hennessy Center for Education and Teaching Excellence at Framingham State College, and the Christa McAuliffe Residential Community building at Bowie State University are named in her memory, as are the asteroid 3352 McAuliffe, the crater McAuliffe on the Moon, and a crater on the planet Venus, which was named McAuliffe by the Soviet Union.

There are four middle / junior high schools: Inglewood Junior High, Beaver Lake Middle School, Pine Lake Middle School, and Renaissance School of Art and Reasoning, as well as nearly a dozen elementary schools such as Discovery, Sunny Hills, Cascade Ridge, Challenger, Creekside, Margaret Mead, Samantha Smith, Rachel Carson, Christa McAuliffe, and Elizabeth Blackwell.

Three district buildings are within the village's limits: The District Office Building on Talcott Street, the Owego Elementary School on Christa McAuliffe Lane, and the combined Owego-Apalachin Middle School and Owego Free Academy building on Sheldon Guile Boulevard.

McAuliffe Elementary School in Lenexa, Kansas was one of the first schools in the nation to open named in honor of Christa McAuliffe. The district converted from 7-8-9 Junior High model to the 7-8 Middle School model in 1986.
