Community colleges carry on the tradition of adult education, which was established in Australia around mid 19th century when evening classes were held to help adults enhance their numeracy and literacy skills.

The motivation for community colleges was a new way of thinking about education and training in Canada ( more specifically in Ontario ), and was economically based as opposed to the much earlier start in the United States of Junior and Community Colleges which was driven by an integrative social policy.

Community colleges in Malaysia are a network of educational institutions whereby vocational and technical skills training could be provided at all levels for school leavers before they entered the workforce.

* The Association of Community College Trustees ( ACCT ) has provided education for community college boards of directors and advocacy for community colleges since 1972.

ACCT President and CEO J. Noah Brown has authored a book about the past, present, and future of community colleges called Charting a New Course for Community Colleges: Aligning Policies with Practice.

* The mission of the Community College Research Center from Teachers College at Columbia University is to " conduct research on the major issues affecting community colleges in the United States and to contribute to the development of practice and policy that expands access to higher education and promotes success for all students.

* The Center for Community College Student Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin administers surveys and provides data analysis support to member colleges regarding various factors of student engagement and involvement in community colleges in the United States and Canada.

In 1961, the New York State Legislature established the City University of New York, uniting what had become seven municipal colleges at the time: The City College of New York, Hunter College, Brooklyn College, Queens College, Staten Island Community College, Bronx Community College and Queensborough Community College.

The Seattle Community College District is a group of community colleges located in Seattle, Washington.

It consists of three colleges — North Seattle Community College, Seattle Central Community College ( including the Wood Construction Center and Seattle Maritime Academy ), South Seattle Community College ( including the Georgetown Campus ) — and the Seattle Vocational Institute.

Pierce College is one of the nine colleges of the Los Angeles Community College District, and is accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

Several community colleges are found in the metro area, including J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and John Tyler Community College ( Chesterfield County ).

Oswego County is also home to two colleges: State University of New York at Oswego located in the Town of Oswego and the Fulton Branch Campus of Cayuga County Community College located in the City of Fulton.

For post-16 education, students travel to colleges in other local towns, for example Frome Community College, Strode College in Street or Norton Radstock College in Midsomer Norton.

Community colleges that serve the area include Los Angeles Valley College, Pierce College, and Los Angeles Mission College.
