The backstory of one of the surviving epistles, directed to Constantine I, recounts how the fame of Saint Anthony spread abroad and reached Emperor Constantine.

The widely-held view of Constantine I as a " German sympathiser " owes much to Allied and Venizelist war-time propaganda directed against the King.

As a youth, Constantine VIII had been engaged to a daughter of Emperor Boris II of Bulgaria, but in the end he married a Byzantine aristocrat named Helena.
