Historians have described Long Lance as a fraud, but he had Native American ancestry on both sides of his family: Croatan and Cherokee, he looked Indian, and he knew enough Cherokee to use it when being admitted to the Carlisle School.

In 1885 the Lumbee of Robeson County were recognized by the State of North Carolina under the name Croatan Indians.

About eight miles ( 12 km ) long and two miles ( 3 km ) wide, Roanoke Island lies between the mainland and the barrier islands near Nags Head, with Albemarle Sound on its north, Roanoke Sound at the eastern end, Croatan Sound to the west, and Wanchese CDP at the southern end.

Thus on February 10, 1885, convinced that these were the descendants of the Lost Colony, he helped to pass the " Croatan bill ", that officially designated the Native American population around Robeson county as Croatan.

The UNC Coastal Studies Institute ( UNC-CSI ) is a marine research institute located on Roanoke Island along the Croatan Sound on the Outer Banks.

Donald B. Smith, a history professor and biographer, described Long Lance as " pass as an Indian ", but he confirmed Croatan ancestry on his mother's side, and Cherokee ancestry on his father's.

Pamlico Sound is linked on the north with Albemarle Sound through Roanoke Sound and Croatan Sound ( passages ).

Leaving the Croatan work, First ( Foster's ) Brigade moved on the right, following the county road, while Second ( Reno's ) Brigade followed the railroad on the left.

Five other guns did not face Croatan Sound: a battery of two guns on the eastern side of the island protected against possible assault across Roanoke Sound, and three others occupied an earthwork near the geometric center of the island.

They then moved up Croatan Sound, where they were divided ; some were ordered to fire on the fort at Pork Point ( Fort Bartow ), while others were to concentrate their fire on the seven vessels of the Mosquito Fleet.

The Lumbee, a group which appeared to organize from a variety of peoples on the North Carolina frontier in the 19th century, achieved state recognition as Croatan Indian after Reconstruction.

Many locations are named after Virginia Dare, including Dare County, North Carolina ; the Virginia Dare Trail, a section of NC 12 ; Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge, the second, newest, and widest bridge spanning the Croatan Sound connecting Roanoke Island to Manns Harbor.

Following Reconstruction, in 1885, through the effort of the Democratic representative Hamilton MacMillan, the North Carolina legislature formally recognized the people in Robeson County as " Croatan Indians.

In 1885, the politician Hamilton McMillan proposed the theory that the Lumbee were descendants of England's " Lost Colony of Roanoke ", who intermarried with what he described as the " Croatan " Indians.

The state legislature passed a bill in 1885 to recognize the tribe as the " Croatan Indians of Robeson County.

The Croatan Indians voted for the Democrats and were authorized to have Indian schools in Robeson County.

The Croatan Sound, for instance, lies between mainland Dare County and Roanoke Island.

The anthropologist John R. Swanton of the Smithsonian Institution tried to identify the origin of the people known as Croatan Indians before the 1950s ( they have since identified as Lumbee ).

Seven sounds making up the whole: Albemarle Sound, Currituck Sound, Croatan Sound, Pamlico Sound, Bogue Sound, Core Sound, and Roanoke Sound.

Two ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Croatan, after the Croatan Sound of the North Carolina coast.

It flows east, then SSE, along the border between Onslow, Jones and Carteret counties, and forming the western boundary of Croatan National Forest.

Hunter College – so-named in 1914, originally Female Normal and High School and later the Normal College – had existed since 1870, and later expanded into the Bronx in the early 20th century with what became Herbert Lehman College, but CCNY and Hunter resisted merging.

The state legislature selected Ellensburg as the location for the then Normal School as a consolation prize.

The following year, Wells won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science ( later the Royal College of Science in South Kensington, now part of Imperial College London ) in London, studying biology under Thomas Henry Huxley.

Upon leaving the Normal School of Science, Wells was left without a source of income.

James Madison University ( also known as JMU, Madison, or James Madison ) is a public coeducational research university located in Harrisonburg, Virginia, U. S. Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the university has undergone four name changes before settling with James Madison University.

It was originally called The State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg.

In 1914, the name of the university was changed to the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg.

The university was established in 1910 as the Kent State Normal School as a teacher-training school.

Deciding that he would like to become a professional teacher, Mao enrolled at a teacher training college, the Fourth Normal School of Changsha, which had high standards yet low fees and cheap accommodation.

Several months later, it amalgamated with the prestigious First Normal School of Changsha, widely seen as the best school in Hunan province ; Mao biographer Stuart Schram would later note that the environment of the school provided " an ideal training ground for his apprenticeship as a political worker.

In the subsequent reorganization of the provincial administration, Mao was appointed as the headmaster of the junior section of the First Normal School.

Northern Michigan University was established in 1899 by the Michigan Legislature as Northern State Normal School with the original purpose of providing teacher preparation programs in Michigan's then-wild and sparsely populated Upper Peninsula.

In 1946 the College was forced by postwar enrollment to move from Craigdarroch to the Lansdowne campus of the Provincial Normal School ( This is the current location of the Camosun College Lansdowne Campus ).

The Normal School, itself an institution with a long and honourable history, joined Victoria College in 1956 as its Faculty of Education.

** Plattsburgh Normal School ( Plattsburgh, New York )

* May 2 – The California State Normal School ( later San Jose State University ) is created by an Act of the California Legislature.

Born in Virginia, she had studied at Hampton Institute and the Massachusetts State Normal School at Framingham.

Lewiston State Normal School, now Lewis-Clark State College, was established in 1893, as was another normal school or teacher education college, now defunct, in the south at Twin Falls.

In March 1881, after heavy lobbying by Los Angeles residents, the California State Legislature authorized the creation of a southern branch of the California State Normal School ( which later became San Jose State University ) in downtown Los Angeles to train teachers for the growing population of Southern California.

The State Normal School at Los Angeles opened on August 29, 1882, on what is now the site of the Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library system.
