More than 20, 000 people were forced to leave the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2009, an action the DR Congo said was in retaliation for regular expulsion of Congolese diamond miners who were in Angola illegally.

" Congo and Angola have agreed to suspend expulsions from both sides of the border ," said Lambert Mende, DR Congo information minister, in October 2009.

In May 2001, there was an unsuccessful coup attempt by Kolingba and once again Patassé had to turn to friends abroad for support, this time Libya and DR Congo were helpful.

When former President Kolingba attempted a coup d ’ état in 2001 ( which was, according to Patassé, supported by France ), the Movement for the Liberation of Congo ( MLC ) of Jean-Pierre Bemba in DR Congo came to his rescue.

In the DR Congo the only highway which physically matches the route is National Road No. 2, and most passengers and freight moving between Kinshasa and that road goes by boat along the Congo River.

Three routes in the Trans-African Highway network pass through DR Congo:

* Lagos-Mombasa Highway: the DR Congo is the main missing link in this east-west highway and requires a new road to be constructed before it can function.

* G. c. antiquorum, the Kordofan giraffe, has a distribution which includes southern Chad, the Central African Republic, northern Cameroon and north-eastern DR Congo.

It does provide improved highway links to neighbouring Cameroon but its continuation across DR Congo to East Africa is lacking, as are highways from Cameroon to Central Africa and Southern Africa which could boost trade within the continent.

The central line between Kigoma and Dar es Salaam carries international freight and passengers in transit from Burundi, DR Congo and Rwanda to the Indian Ocean, and the branch from Tabora to Mwanza carries freight and passengers between Uganda and the Indian Ocean.

Trade has suffered due to wars in the DR Congo.

Historically, Tanzania has played an active role in hosting refugees from neighboring countries including Mozambique, DR Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda.

All aircraft registered in the Congo DR have been banned from UAE airspace due to poor safety standards.

* Zambia Railways Limited ( ZRL ) — narrow gauge, 846 km Kitwe-Ndola-New Kapiri Mposhi-Kabwe-Lusaka-Livingstone-Zimbabwe with several freight branches mostly in the Copperbelt totalling 427 km including to DR Congo.

Angola sent a delegation to DR Congo's capital Kinshasa and succeeded in stopping government-forced expulsions which had become a " tit-for-tat " immigration dispute.
