Das and Fräulein
" Das Fräulein von Scuderi ", an 1819 short story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, in which Mlle de Scudery establishes the innocence of the police's favorite suspect in the murder of a jeweller, is sometimes cited as the first detective story and a direct influence on Edgar Allan Poe's " The Murders in the Rue Morgue ".
The two soon formed a close friendship and Droste wrote a number of ballads for inclusion in the book, among them " Das Fräulein von Rodenschild " and " Der Tod des Erzbischofs Engelbert von Köln ".

Hoffmann's tale Das Fräulein von Scuderi ( 1819 ), Elizabeth von Arnim's epistolary novel Fräulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther ( 1907 ), and the comedy film Fräulein vom Amt ( 1954 ), whose title was a common phrase denoting a female operator at a telephone exchange.
Of the few films in which she did act, Amphitryon ( 1935, playing Alkmene ), Das Fräulein von Barnhelm ( 1940 ) and, after the war, Rose Bernd ( 1957 ) and Karl May ( a 1976 biopic about Karl May ) are notable.
With these tragedies, to which may be added Die Rechte des Herzens ( The Rights of the Heart ) and Das Fräulein von Scuderi ( The Lady of Scuderi ), the comedy Hans Frey, and an unfinished tragedy on the subject of Agnes Bernauer, Ludwig ranks immediately after Christian Friedrich Hebbel as Germany's most notable dramatic poet at the middle of the 19th century.

In 1841, the German linguist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics of " Das Lied der Deutschen " to Haydn's melody, lyrics that were considered revolutionary at the time.
Hoffmann von Fallersleben intended Das Lied der Deutschen to be sung to Haydn's tune, as the first publication of the poem included the music.
The year after he wrote Das Deutschlandlied, Hoffmann von Fallersleben lost his job as a librarian and professor in Breslau, Prussia, because of this and other revolutionary works, and was forced into hiding until being pardoned after the revolutions of 1848 in the German states.

The second major variation is the song " Wenn alle untreu werden " ( German: " If everyone becomes unfaithful ") better known as " Das Treuelied ", which was written by the poet Max von Schenkendorf ( 1783 – 1817 ) and used exactly the same melody as the Wilhelmus.
The celesta is also notably used in Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6, particularly in the 1st, 2nd and 4th movements, in his Symphony No. 8 and Das Lied von der Erde.
