Late in the century, Gustav Mahler wrote his early Das klagende Lied on his own words, between 1878 and 1880, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor created a successful trilogy of cantatas The Song of Hiawatha between 1898 and 1900.

In its original form, Das klagende Lied is one of the earliest of his works to have survived ( the Piano Quartet movement in A minor is believed to date from 1876 ).

Mahler began to write the text of Das klagende Lied ( presumably basing it on the fairy tale of the same name by Ludwig Bechstein and / or Der singende Knochen ( The Singing Bones ) by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm ) during the early part of his final year in the Vienna Conservatory, where he was a student between 1875 and 1878.

The first performance of Das klagende Lied took place on 17 February 1901 in Vienna with Mahler himself conducting, and it was in this two-part version that the work was published and entered the repertoire.

The celesta is also notably used in Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6, particularly in the 1st, 2nd and 4th movements, in his Symphony No. 8 and Das Lied von der Erde.

During 2006, the group released the album Volk ( German for People ), featuring cover versions of national anthems, including the NSK state anthem " Das Lied der Deutschen ", originally written in 1979 and used during the Weimar Republic.

Mahler did not live to perform his Das Lied von der Erde or Symphony No. 9, but his widow, Alma Mahler, asked Walter to premiere both.

Walter led the first performance of Das Lied in 1911 in Munich and of the Ninth in 1912 in Vienna with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Decades later, Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic ( with Mahler's brother-in-law Arnold Rose still the concertmaster ) made the first recordings of Das Lied von der Erde in 1936 and of the Ninth Symphony in 1938.

His famous Decca Das Lied von der Erde with Kathleen Ferrier, Julius Patzak, and the Vienna Philharmonic was made in May, 1952, and he recorded it again in studio with the New York Philharmonic in 1960.

Since Mahler himself never conducted the Ninth Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde, Walter's performances cannot be taken as documentations of Mahler's interpretations.

From 2 February until 12 March 2010, the TV-broadcasters ProSieben and Das Erste ( ARD ) collaborated to find Germany's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010.
