Davis – Monthan Air Force Base ( DM AFB ) is a United States Air Force base located within the city limits, and approximately south-southeast of downtown, Tucson, Arizona.

The host unit at Davis – Monthan is the 355th Fighter Wing ( 355 FW ) assigned to Twelfth Air Force, which is headquartered at DM and is part of Air Combat Command ( ACC ).

Davis – Monthan Air Force Base is a key ACC installation.

The base was named in honor of Lieutenants Samuel H. Davis and Oscar Monthan, two Tucsonans and World War I – era pilots who died in separate military aircraft accidents.

The rapid increase in aviation activities meant a move in 1927 to the site which is now Davis – Monthan Air Force Base.

On 11 January 1948, with the establishment of the United States Air Force, the facility was renamed Davis – Monthan Air Force Base.

The flight and mysterious crash of Captain Craig D. Button took off from Davis – Monthan Air Force Base on 12 April 1997.

On September 4, 1985 the last three F-106 Delta Darts from the 87rh FIS departed K. I. Sawyer for AMARC at Davis Monthan AFB.

The U-2s were relocated to Davis – Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Arizona, in July 1963, and Laughlin's mission transitioned to the Undergraduate Pilot Training mission in the T-37 and T-38 aircraft.

The XC-99 will remain at Davis – Monthan Air Force Base, in an area containing other aircraft belonging to the Museum, until the restoration staff has the time and resources to perform a full restoration.

From the previous section a decision appears to have been taken in 2011 to return the dismantled aircraft to the south-western USA ( it passed 47 years at the Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, before being moved to the Museum in Ohio ), this time to the Davis – Monthan Air Force Base, in Tucson, Arizona ( the dry conditions of the Arizona desert would protect the aircraft from further corrosion until a full restoration can be carried out or until its deterioration can be otherwise prevented ).

It is not clear whether the dismantled aircraft has, in fact, been moved to Davis – Monthan ; whether it remains at the National Museum of the USAF at Wright-Patterson ; or indeed whether it has been moved elsewhere.

By 31 May 2012, the 337th airlift squadron moved the tail assembly and the propellers to Davis – Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona.
