Godefroy Engelmann, who moved his press from Mulhouse to Paris in 1816, largely succeeded in resolving the technical problems, and during the 1820s lithography was adopted by artists such as Delacroix and Géricault.

There is reason to believe that his father, Charles-François Delacroix, was infertile at the time of Eugène's conception and that his real father was Talleyrand, who was a friend of the family and successor of Charles Delacroix as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and whom the adult Eugène resembled in appearance and character.

The impact of Géricault's The Raft of the Medusa was profound, and stimulated Delacroix to produce his first major painting, The Barque of Dante, which was accepted by the Paris Salon in 1822.

Delacroix was quickly recognized as a leading painter in the new Romantic style, and the picture was bought by the state.

Delacroix, who was born as the Age of Enlightenment was giving way to the ideas and style of romanticism, rejected the emphasis on precise drawing that characterised the academic art of his time, and instead gave a new prominence to freely brushed colour.

Delacroix repainted the background of his 1824 Massacre de Scio after seeing the Constables at Arrowsmith's Gallery, which he said had done him a great deal of good.

In 1838 Delacroix exhibited Medea about to Kill Her Children, which created a sensation at the Salon.

Though the painting was quickly purchased by the State, Delacroix was disappointed when it was sent to the Lille Musée des Beaux-Arts ; he had intended for it to hang at the Luxembourg, where it would have joined The Barque of Dante and Scenes from the Massacres of Chios.

On occasion Delacroix painted pure landscapes ( The Sea at Dieppe, 1852 ) and still lifes ( Still Life with Lobsters, 1826-7 ), both of which feature the virtuoso execution of his figure-based works.

From about 1908 to 1912 he led a band in residency at Delacroix Island, Louisiana.

Delacroix followed up with Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi ( 1827 ), commemorating a siege of the previous year, and the Death of Sardanapalus, inspired by Lord Byron, which although set in antiquity has been credited with beginning the mixture of sex, violence, lassitude and exoticism which runs through much French Orientalist painting.

Signac left several important works on the theory of art, among them From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism, published in 1899 ; a monograph devoted to Johan Barthold Jongkind ( 1819 – 1891 ), published in 1927 ; several introductions to the catalogues of art exhibitions ; and many other still unpublished writings.
