Charles Ammi Cutter ( 1837 – 1903 ), inspired by the decimal classification of his contemporary Melvil Dewey, and with Dewey's initial encouragement, developed his own classification scheme for the Winchester Town Library and then the Boston Athenaeum, at which he served as librarian for twenty-four years.

He firmly declined all of the offers and many believed he was foregoing his only opportunity to be president ; Thomas E. Dewey was considered the other probable winner, would presumably serve two terms, and Eisenhower, at age 66 in 1956, would then be too old.

The earlier editions were printed in the peculiar spelling that Dewey had devised: the number of volumes in each edition increased to two, then three and now four.

Whereas Parker started with practice and then moved to theory, Dewey began with hypotheses and then devised methods and curricula to test them.

As 1944 began the frontrunners for the Republican nomination appeared to be Wendell Willkie, the party's 1940 candidate, Senator Robert Taft of Ohio, the leader of the party's conservatives, New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey, the leader of the party's powerful, moderate eastern establishment, General Douglas MacArthur, then serving as an Allied commander in the Pacific theater of the war, and former Minnesota Governor Harold Stassen, then serving as a U. S. naval officer in the Pacific.

Dewey first served as a federal prosecutor, then started a lucrative private practice on Wall Street ; however, he left his practice for an appointment as special prosecutor to look into corruption in New York City — with the official title of Chief Assistant U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Dewey then played a major role in helping California Senator Richard Nixon become Eisenhower's running mate.

In 1966, they got their own title, Huey, Dewey, and Louie and the Junior Woodchucks, published by Gold Key Comics for 62 issues, and then continued by Whitman Comics for another 20 issues until 1983.

After discovery of gold on Lynx Creek in the spring of 1863, the Dewey area was settled around the summer 1863 by pioneer prospector, rancher and Indian-fighter King Woolsey ( 1832 – 1879 ), who founded the Agua Fria Ranch, then better known as " Woolsey Valley ," to supply the miners.

The border then takes a right on Western Avenue to the Governor Thomas E. Dewey Thruway ( Interstate 87 ) and goes north to the Albany city line.

Melvil Dewey, who invented the Dewey Decimal System, designed what was then called " Placid Park Club " in 1895 and inspired the village to change its name to Lake Placid, which became an incorporated village in 1900.

By then the work on the " Dictionary of Philosophy and Psychology " ( 1902 ) had been announced and a period of intense philosophical correspondence ensued with the contributors to the project: William James, John Dewey, Charles Sanders Peirce, Josiah Royce, George Edward Moore, Bernard Bosanquet, James McKeen Cattell, Edward B. Titchener, Hugo Münsterberg, Christine Ladd-Franklin, Adolf Meyer, George Stout, Franklin Henry Giddings, Edward Bagnall Poulton and others.

It was then that the band was officially named " Boston ," by suggestion of Boylan and engineer Warren Dewey.

After serving about a year as an attorney for a Wall Street law office, he became an assistant district attorney in 1938 and was appointed by then District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey to a sixty-man task force aimed at routing out New York City's organized crime.

Dewey began studying law in 1833, first with his father, then with the law firm Hanen & Davies, then with Samuel S. Bowne in Cooperstown, New York.

In 1899 she cataloged the collection according to the then new Dewey Decimal system.

It flows through the Dolores River Canyon, then cuts across Paradox Valley before receiving the San Miguel River ( incidentally, both the Dolores and the San Miguel have their headwaters to either side of Lizard Head Pass ) in Montrose County and crossing into Utah, where it joins the Colorado in Grand County near the former Dewey Bridge.

Some ten years later, the Dewey Commission was cited in great detail, when in an open letter to the British press dated 25 February 1946, written by George Orwell and signed by Arthur Koestler, C. E. M. Joad, Frank Horrabin, George Padmore, Julian Symons, H. G. Wells, F. A. Ridley, C. A. Smith and John Baird, among others, it was suggested that the Nuremberg Trials then underway were an invaluable opportunity for establishing " historical truth and bearing upon the political integrity " of figures of international standing.

White's presence at Port Hudson is supported by a secondhand account of a postwar dinner conversation he had with Senator Knute Nelson of Minnesota, a Union veteran of Port Hudson, and another recounted by Admiral George Dewey ( then a Federal naval officer at Port Hudson ), in both of which White mentioned his presence during the siege.

His reactions to the prevailing theories and practices in education, corrections made to these philosophies, and recommendations to teachers and administrators to embrace “ the new education ,” provide a vital account of the history of the development of educational thinking in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. 4 Dewey placed so called pragmatism above moral absolutes and helped give rise to situational ethics.

Dewey, on the other hand, believed the public was not only capable of understanding the issues created or responded to by the elite, it was in the public forum that decisions should be made after discussion and debate.

Stassen stunned Dewey and MacArthur in the Wisconsin primary ; Stassen's surprise victory virtually eliminated General MacArthur, whose supporters had made a major effort on his behalf.

Dewey would be killed while he made his daily morning call to his office from a pay phone near his home.

Army General George C. Marshall made a persistent effort to persuade Dewey not to touch this topic ; Dewey eventually yielded.

In 1956, when Eisenhower mulled not running for a second term, he suggested Dewey as his choice as successor, but party leaders made it plain that they would not entrust the nomination to Dewey yet again, and ultimately Eisenhower decided to run for re-election.

John Dewey may have made the first direct mainstream use of " social capital " in The School and Society in 1899, though he did not offer a definition.

The State University of New York was established in 1948 by Governor Thomas E. Dewey, through legislative implementation of recommendations made by the Temporary Commission on the Need for a State University ( 1946 – 1948 ).

During the trial, Dewey exposed Luciano for lying on the witness stand through direct quizzing and records of telephone calls ; Luciano also had no explanation for why his federal income tax records claimed he made only $ 22, 000 a year, while he was obviously a wealthy man.

In December 2007, he made a cameo appearance in the movie Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, playing Buddy Holly.

The Judge routine, made popular by legendary showman Sammy Davis, Jr. was borrowed from the act of long-time Burlesque entertainer Dewey " Pigmeat " Markham.

Tresca was a member of the Dewey Commission which cleared Trotsky of all charges made during the Moscow Trials.

He has recorded Coleman compositions on a number of his records ( starting with a medley of " Round Trip " and " Broadway Blues " on his debut Bright Size Life ); worked extensively with Coleman collaborators such as Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman, and Billy Higgins ; and has even made a record, Song X, with Coleman.

At Schley's request, because of the charges made against him in the book, a court of inquiry was opened on September 12, 1901, composed of Admiral George Dewey, Rear Admiral Andrew E. K. Benham and Rear Admiral Francis Munroe Ramsay, which investigated Schley's conduct before and during the Battle of Santiago.

Following months of investigation, the Dewey Commission made its findings public in New York on September 21, 1937.

The union may, in fact, have made a deal of some sort with Buchalter, although no evidence has ever surfaced, despite intensive efforts of political opponents of the union, such as Thomas Dewey and Westbrook Pegler, to find it.
