It helped spearhead development of the Internet, including the Domain Name System and refinement of TCP / IP communications protocols that remain fundamental to Internet operations.

In addition to helping develop TCP / IP and the Domain Name System ( DNS ), ISI contributed to the Net by editing the " Request for Comments " ( RFC ) series, the written record of the emerging network's technical structure and operation, from 1977 through 2009.

The 68000 became the dominant CPU for Unix based workstations including Sun workstations and Apollo / Domain workstations, found its way into heralded computers such as the Apple Lisa and Macintosh, Amiga, Atari ST, and was used in the first generation of desktop laser printers including the original Apple Inc. LaserWriter and the HP LaserJet.

At its introduction, the 68000 was first used in high-priced systems, including multiuser microcomputers like the WICAT 150, early Alpha Microsystems computers, Sage II / IV, Tandy TRS-80 Model 16, and Fortune 32: 16 ; single-user workstations such as Hewlett-Packard's HP 9000 Series 200 systems, the first Apollo / Domain systems, Sun Microsystems ' Sun-1, and the Corvus Concept ; and graphics terminals like Digital Equipment Corporation's VAXstation 100 and Silicon Graphics ' IRIS 1000 and 1200.

The Apollo / Domain workstation was heavily influenced by the Alto.

* DM ( computing ), Display Manager, a window system for Apollo / Domain workstations running AEGIS ( Domain / OS )

It is located in Cyberjaya near The Domain and serves French / Belgian food and snacks, liquors and beers from all over the world.

Apollo / Domain was a range of workstations developed and produced by Apollo Computer from circa 1980 to 1989.

The original operating system was Apollo's own product called Aegis, which was later renamed to Domain / OS.

The Aegis and Domain / OS system offered advanced features for the time, for example an object oriented filesystem, network transparency, diskless booting, a graphical user interface and in Domain / OS, interoperability with BSD, System V and POSIX.

After the purchase of Apollo Computer by HP, a merged line of workstations that could run either Domain / OS or HP-UX was produced with the name HP / Apollo 425t and HP / Apollo 433s.

Apollo addressed both problems by introducing the RISC-based DN10000 and Unix-friendly Domain / OS operating system.

However, the DN10000, though fast, was extremely expensive, and a reliable version of Domain / OS came too late to make a difference.

They later released the DN2500 series workstation, a cheap alternative to the DN3x00 / 4x00 series, and later still the HP 9000 Series 400 line, which could run either HP's own flavor of Unix, HP-UX, or Domain / OS.

In this case, the choice had to be made at time of purchase, partly because HP-UX and Domain / OS functionality required different keyboards and mice.

Apollo workstations ran Aegis ( later replaced by Domain / OS ), a proprietary operating system with a POSIX-compliant Unix alternative frontend.

In the end, Hewlett Packard shut down the Domain / OS line.

* Domain / OS

The initial design of DCE UUIDs was based on UUIDs as defined in the Network Computing System, whose design was in turn inspired by the ( 64-bit ) unique identifiers defined and used pervasively in Domain / OS, the operating system designed by Apollo Computer, Inc.

Work began on VUE in 1988 at Apollo Computer for use with Domain / OS, as an alternative to Apollo's standard DM and wmgr.

Shortly later, HP acquired Apollo, where they released the first version of VUE for Domain / OS, and then went on to modify VUE for use with HP-UX.
