In particular there is a persistent emphasis on themes such as the persecution of the chosen people ( Domine praestolamur a5 ) the Babylonian or Egyptian captivity ( Domine tu iurasti ) and the long-awaited coming of deliverance ( Laetentur caeli, Circumspice Jerusalem ).

Particularly striking examples of these are the final section of Tribulatio proxima est ( 1589 ) and the multi-sectional Infelix ego ( 1591 ), a large-scale motet which takes its point of departure from Tribue Domine of 1575.

They include three motets which employ the old-fashioned cantus firmus technique as well as the most famous item in the 1589 collection, Ne irascaris Domine the second part of which is closely modelled on Philip van Wilder's popular Aspice Domine.

Also belonging to the more archaic stratum of motets is Libera me Domine ( a5 ), a cantus firmus setting of the ninth responsory at Matins for the Office for the Dead, which takes its point of departure from the setting by Robert Parsons, while Miserere mihi ( a6 ), a setting of a Compline antiphon often used by Tudor composers for didactic cantus firmus exercises, incorporates a four-in-two canon.

Tribue Domine ( a6 ) is a large-scale sectional composition setting a from a medieval collection of Meditationes which was commonly attributed to St Augustine, composed in a style which owes much to earlier Tudor settings of votive antiphons as a mosaic of full and semichoir passages.

In this work, texts from Ecclesiasticus are woven together with the Antiphon for Peace, " Da pacem Domine ", which is used as a cantus firmus.

At the Mass, it is prayed, Perceptio Corporis tui, Domine Jesu Christe, quod ego indignus sumere praesumo, non mihi proveniat in judicium et condemnationem: sed pro tua pietate prosit mihi ad tutamentum mentis ot corporis, et ad medelam percipiendam ... essentially meaning, ' though I am unworthy, I presume to receive Thy Body ; may it not turn to my judgment and condemnation '.

To the simple Benedictine psalmody — modified, there is a fourth psalm, " In te Domine speravi " ( Psalm 30 )— and perhaps at a fairly late date it added the solemn introduction of a benediction with a reading ( based perhaps on the spiritual reading which, in the Rule of St. Benedict, precedes Compline ; RB, Chap.

The distinctive character and greater solemnity of the Roman form of Compline comes from the response, In manus tuas, Domine (" Into Thy hands, O Lord ..."), with the evangelical canticle, Nunc Dimittis, and its anthem, which is particularly characteristic.

Exsurge Domine ( Latin Arise O Lord ) is a papal bull issued on 15 June 1520 by Pope Leo X in response to the teachings of Martin Luther which opposed the views of the papacy.

Printed copies of this bull bore the Latin title Bulla contra errores Martini Lutheri et sequacium ( Bull against the errors of Martin Luther and his followers ), but it is more commonly known by the opening words of the bull's original Latin text: Exsurge Domine ( Arise O Lord ).

He then notes that the practice of burning heretics poses a " serious ethical problem " and thus he finds in Exsurge Domine support for his conclusion that " the idea that Papal Infallibility can be presented as independent of any conciliar consent and as ' the constant belief of the universal Church ' is rejected.

The Vatican's copy of Exsurge Domine is still extant in the Vatican Library.

Its name is a play on words, combining The Dark Side of the Moon and the front cover of Atom Heart Mother, and for some time was the only way to hear the studio version of " Astronomy Domine " in the U. S, which was not included on their release of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

* " Inquisition " is a version of the Latin phrase Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem ( O sweet Lord Jesus, grant them rest ) chanted as it would be by monks.

Ferrabosco's motets provided direct models for Byrd's Emendemus in melius ( a5 ), O lux beata Trinitas ( a6 ), Domine secundum actum meum ( a6 ) and Siderum rector ( a5 ) as well as a more generalized paradigm for what Joseph Kerman has called Byrd's ' affective-imitative ' style, a method of setting pathetic texts in extended paragraphs based on subjects employing curving lines in fluid rhythm and contrapuntal techniques which Byrd learnt from his study of Ferrabosco.

The clerks cried out Gloria tibi, Domine.

* The Italian metal band Domine has a number of songs based on the Elric saga and referencing Stormbringer and Mourneblade.

Italian metal band Domine have also recorded a song based on the Eternal Champion concept on their Champion Eternal album.

It is often misquoted as " peace in our time ", which had appeared long before in The Book of Common Prayer as " Give peace in our time, O Lord ", probably based on the 7th-century hymn ' Da pacem Domine!

In keeping with the custom of that time, Palestrina was buried on the same day he died, in a plain coffin with a lead plate on which was inscribed Libera me Domine.
