Donald Campbell was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, the son of Malcolm, later Sir Malcolm Campbell, holder of 13 world speed records in the 1920s and 30s in the famous Bluebird cars and boats, and his second wife, Dorothy Evelyn née Whittall.

When Malcolm died in 1093, his brother Domnall III ( Donald III ) succeeded him.

John of Fordun wrote that Duncan's wife fled Scotland, taking her children, including the future kings Malcolm III ( Máel Coluim mac Donnchada ) and Donald III ( Domnall Bán mac Donnchada, or Donalbane ) with her.

Malcolm and his son Edward were killed and Malcolm III's brother Donald seized the throne.

Donald was ousted and Edgar installed his nephew and namesake, Malcolm and Margaret's son Edgar, on the Scottish throne.

The renewed American success persuaded Malcolm Campbell's son Donald, who had already driven Bluebird K4 to within sight of his father's record, to make a further push for the record.

Although Sir Iain Moncreiffe, perhaps the greatest herald genealogist, believed his family were of Celtic origin and descended from a younger son of the Lamonts, the generally accepted view is that they descended from a French family called de Leon, who came north with Edgar, son of Malcolm III, at the end of the eleventh century to fight against his uncle, Donald Bane, the usurper of the throne.

Donald Campbell Dewar ( 21 August 1937 – 11 October 2000 ) was a Scottish politician who served as a Labour Party Member of Parliament ( MP ) in Scotland from 1966-1970, and then again from 1978 until his death in 2000.

When Donald Campbell was buried in Coniston cemetery on 12 September 2001 she did not attend the service.
