An early Edison production was The Execution Of Mary, Queen Of Scots.

The discovery that movies are a form of fiction was made in the early years of this century and it was made chiefly by two men, a French magician, Georges Melies, and an American employee of Edison, Edwin S. Porter.

Another prominent member was Thomas A. Edison.

A more reliable and controllable method of producing cathode rays was investigated by Hittorf and Goldstein, and rediscovered by Thomas Edison in 1880.

In 1995 the government was defeated in elections by the United Workers Party of Edison James.

At the time, Edison was investigating why the filaments of his carbon-filament light bulbs nearly always burned out at the positive-connected end.

Edison was awarded a patent for this invention in 1884.

Since there was no apparent practical use for such a device at the time, the patent application was most likely simply a precaution in case someone else did find a use for the so-called Edison effect.

Through such people as Nikola Tesla, Galileo Ferraris, Oliver Heaviside, Thomas Edison, Ottó Bláthy, Ányos Jedlik, Sir Charles Parsons, Joseph Swan, George Westinghouse, Ernst Werner von Siemens, Alexander Graham Bell and Lord Kelvin, electricity was turned from a scientific curiosity into an essential tool for modern life, becoming a driving force for the Second Industrial Revolution.

As a result of the work of Étienne-Jules Marey and Eadweard Muybridge, many researchers in the late 19th century realized that films as they are known today were a practical possibility, but the first to design a fully successful apparatus was W. K. L. Dickson, working under the direction of Thomas Alva Edison.

The other important American competitor was the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company, which used a new camera designed by Dickson after he left the Edison company.

It was clear that Edison originally intended to create a sound film system, which would not gain worldwide recognition until the release of " The Jazz Singer " in 1927.

The Edison company took up a projector developed by Armat and Jenkins, the " Phantoscope ", which was renamed the Vitascope, and it joined various projecting machines made by other people to show the 480 mm.

Unique among all the one minute long films made by the Edison company, which recorded parts of the acts of variety performers for their Kinetoscope viewing machines, was The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.

The best known of these film-makers was Edwin S. Porter, who started making films for the Edison Company in 1901.

Up to 1913, most American film production was still carried out around New York, but because of the monopoly of Thomas Edison's film patents, many filmmakers had moved to Southern California, hoping to escape the litany of lawsuits that the Edison Company had been bringing to protect its monopoly.

The kinetoscope, first shown commercially by Thomas Edison in the United States in 1894, was first shown in Japan in November 1896.

In 1910, Edison Studios produced the first film version of Frankenstein, which was thought lost for many years.

He was also consultant to the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company, Swan Company, Ferranti, Edison Telephone, and later the Edison Electric Light Company.

The Motion Picture Patents Company ( MPPC, also known as the Edison Trust ), founded in December 1908, was a trust of all the major American film companies ( Edison, Biograph, Vitagraph, Essanay, Selig, Lubin, Kalem, American Star, American Pathé ), the leading film distributor ( George Kleine ) and the biggest supplier of raw film stock, Eastman Kodak.

The MPPC was preceded by the Edison licensing system, in effect in 1907 – 1908, on which the MPPC was modeled.

Edison was ranked the 28th most livable small city in the United States by CNN Money Magazine, and the 2nd in New Jersey in 2006 in Money Magazine's " Best Places To Live ".

In 2009, Edison was ranked as one of " America's 10 Best Places to Grow Up " by U. S. News and World Report.

Edison High School was ranked 169th in 2010 and 177th in 2008.

Soon thereafter, the city's schools ranked last among the state's 501 districts, leading Pennsylvania education officials in 2001 to hire the for-profit Edison Schools to run the local school district for three years.

Thomas Edison independently rediscovered the principle on February 13, 1880.

In 1882, Edison switched on the world's first large-scale electrical supply network that provided 110 volts direct current to fifty-nine customers in lower Manhattan.

In 1893 at the Chicago World's Fair, Thomas Edison introduced to the public two pioneering inventions based on this innovation ; the Kinetograph – the first practical moving picture camera – and the Kinetoscope.

Edison, however, never attempted to patent these instruments on the other side of the Atlantic, since they relied so greatly on previous experiments and innovations from Britain and Europe.

After leaving the University of Nottingham in 1882, Fleming took up the post of " Electrician " to the Edison Electrical Light Company, advising on lighting systems and the new Ferranti alternating current systems.

Spacey also appeared in Edison, co-starring Morgan Freeman and Justin Timberlake ; Edison received a direct-to-video release on July 18, 2006.

Thomas Edison received US patent 180, 857 for " Autographic Printing " on August 8, 1876.

In 1880 Edison obtained a further patent, US 224, 665: " Method of Preparing Autographic Stencils for Printing ", which covered the making of stencils using a file plate, a grooved metal plate on which the stencil was placed which perforated the stencil when written on with a blunt metal stylus.

The only real check on the power of the networks is Edison Carter, a crusading investigative journalist who regularly exposes the unethical practices of his own employer, and the team of allies both inside and outside the system who assist him in getting his reports to air and protecting him from the forces that wish to silence or kill him.

The series depicted very little of the past described by Edison, though he did meet a female televangelist ( whom he once dated when his reporting put him at odds with the Vu Age Church that she now headed ) and a former colleague / rival who later died ( and whose death sent Edison off on close to a rampage to avenge that death ).

According to a personal statistics file displayed on a computer screen in the series, Edison is 6 ' 2 ", weighing 180 pounds.

She was also the pseudo-love-interest of Edison Carter, but that subplot was not explored fully on the show before it was cancelled.

Ironically, it had been Bryce, following orders from Grossberg, who fought a hacking battle of sorts ( a la the opening scene to Hackers ) with Theora Jones that led to Edison hitting his head on a traffic barrier and falling unconscious.

He is a good friend of Edison Carter, and saves him on more than one occasion.

However, he is not above selling out his employers if it means a big payoff, a fact which Edison Carter takes advantage of on several occasions while working on stories.

He announced his invention of the first phonograph, a device for recording and replaying sound, on November 21, 1877 ( early reports appear in Scientific American and several newspapers in the beginning of November, and an even earlier announcement of Edison working on a ' talking-machine ' can be found in the Chicago Daily Tribune on May 9 ), and he demonstrated the device for the first time on November 29 ( it was patented on February 19, 1878 as US Patent 200, 521 ).
