But Edward was invading Scotland for precisely the same reason, and his insubordinate vassal was the ally of the king of France.

In the 13th century, after several years of political unrest, Scotland is invaded and conquered by King Edward I of England ( known as " Longshanks ") ( McGoohan ).

In Scotland, chips were first sold in Dundee, "... in the 1870s, that glory of British gastronomy – the chip – was first sold by Belgian immigrant Edward De Gernier in the city ’ s Greenmarket.

Edward Irving, a minister in the Church of Scotland, writes of a woman who would " speak at great length, and with superhuman strength, in an unknown tongue, to the great astonishment of all who heard, and to her own great edification and enjoyment in God ".

The 1744 version of the song was popularised in Scotland and England the following year, with the landing of Charles Edward Stuart and was published in The Gentleman's Magazine ( see illustration above ).

To prevent civil war the Scottish magnates asked Edward I of England to arbitrate, for which he extracted legal recognition that the realm of Scotland was held as a feudal dependency to the throne of England before choosing John Balliol, the man with the strongest claim, who became king in 1292.

Over the next few years Edward I used the concessions he had gained to systematically undermine both the authority of King John and the independence of Scotland.

In 1296 Edward invaded Scotland, deposing King John.

* 1890 – The longest bridge in Great Britain, the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland, measuring long, is opened by the Prince of Wales, who later becomes King Edward VII.

In 1052, Macbeth was involved indirectly in the strife in the Kingdom of England between Godwin, Earl of Wessex and Edward the Confessor when he received a number of Norman exiles from England in his court, perhaps becoming the first king of Scots to introduce feudalism to Scotland.

Mary's uncle was King Charles II, who ruled the three kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland ; her maternal grandfather, Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, served for a lengthy period as Charles's chief advisor.

Note the coats of arms both bear on their clothing — Malcolm wears the Lion of Scotland, which historically was not used until the time of his great-grandson William I of Scotland | William the Lion ; Margaret wears the supposed arms of Edward the Confessor, her grand-uncle, although the arms were in fact concocted in the later Middle Ages.
