Rapper / producer El-P and DJ / producer Mr. Len founded the group in 1992 in Queens, New York and rapper / producer Bigg Jus later joined.

Separately, El-P and Mr. Len ended their own deals with Rawkus, effectively severing the relationship between the three and Rawkus.

El-P had gone through a disastrous experience with a record label in an attempt at a solo deal, and founded the group after serving as an intern for an entertainment lawyer.

El-P has started his own record label ( Definitive Jux ) and pursued a solo career.

Trent Reznor, DJ Shadow, Questlove from The Roots, and El-P were said to have produced the album or portions of it, however at this point it seems to have been shelved indefinitely.

Matthew Shipp eventually collaborated with illbient and alternative hip hop musicians ( DJ Spooky, Anti-Pop Consortium, El-P ), and moved towards a distinctive brand of nu jazz comparable to that of Craig Taborn.

It was co-founded in 1999 by Jaime Meline ( El-P ) and Amaechi Uzoigwe.

In February 2010, El-P announced that the label, although it will carry on selling its catalog and merchandise, would be put " on hiatus " as a traditional record label, and that it would be going through some changes in order to keep up with the evolution of the music industry.

Supposedly, RZA, Pete Rock and El-P were set to contribute.

In March 2007, El-P answered " I really doubt it " when asked if a new Cannibal Ox album was coming out anytime in the near future.

He cited creative and financial differences with El-P and Definitive Jux as well as Vordul's alleged clinical depression.

After many requests for him to produce a second Can Ox album, El-P stated on May 28, 2011 via his Facebook page that " there won't ever be a can ox album produced by me again.

The song is sampled for a remix of Company Flow's " Patriotism " when El-P performs it.

Some collaborators from the first album returned, and new collaborators included RZA, Cat Power, Casual, Alex Kapranos, Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda, Jack Johnson, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Mike Patton, El-P, Pharrell, John Oates, Chino Moreno, Lord Finesse, Black Sheep, and comedy actor Tim Meadows.

Over the years, they have supported Public Enemy, The Street, Gang Starr, De La Soul, Jurassic 5, Wyclef Jean, Buck 65, The Pharcyde, El-P, Jeru The Damaja and others.

The following year found Sweeney working in both the country music and hip-hop scenes, providing guitar work, along with Mike Campbell and Smokey Hormel on the Johnny Cash album, American V: A Hundred Highways and appearing with Yo La Tengo bass player James McNew and Def Jux founder El-P, as guest artists on the first track of rapper Cage's album " Hell's Winter.

In 2007 Sweeney again collaborated with El-P, this time alongside Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala of Mars Volta, on El-P's 2007 album, " I'll Sleep When You're Dead.
