With the exception of schools offering the Integrated Programme, which leads to either an International Baccalaureate Diploma or to an A-level exam, most students are streamed into a wide range of course combinations at the end of their second year, bringing the total number of subjects they have to sit at O-level to between six to ten, with English, Mother Tongue or Higher Mother Tongue Language, Mathematics, one Science and one Humanities Elective being compulsory.

In the second year, students choose two subjects as their major subjects as well as an Elective.

Students must also choose three electives from Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Photographic and Digital Media, Languages ( French, German, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin ), Drama, Design and Technology, Food Technology, Textiles and Design, Information Software and Technology, Information Processes and Technology, Commerce, Philosophy, Elective History, and Elective Geography.

TKGS is one of the few schools in Singapore that offer the Music Elective Programme ( MEP ) to students who wish to pursue Music as a subject in the Cambridge ' O ' Level examinations.

TKGS served as a Music Elective Programme ( MEP ) centre for students who were taking music as an ' O ' Level subject but whose schools did not have suitable facilities.

In 1983, TKGS was selected by the Ministry of Education ( MOE ) for the Music Elective Programme ( MEP ), and was one of four schools in Singapore to offer music as an examinable ' O ' Level subject.

It offers the Music Elective Programme and the Drama Elective Programme.
