His insistence on recognition as such by the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire since 1489 resulted in the granting of this recognition in 1514 by Emperor Maximilian I to Vasili III.

He based his claim partially upon a letter discovered in 1717 written in 1514 from Maximilian I to Vasili III, in which the Holy Roman Emperor used the term in referring to Vasili.

In 1863, the invading French, under Napoleon III ( see above ), in alliance with Mexican conservatives and nobility, helped create the Second Mexican Empire, and invited Archduke Maximilian, of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, younger brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I, to become emperor Maximilian I of Mexico.

Mexican Emperor Maximilian built his palace, Chapultepec Castle, over the ruins of an Aztec one.

In the 16th century, in the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, his chronicler Abu al-Fazl ibn Mubarak wrote in the famous Ain-i-Akbari:

The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote praising " the idea of a polity administered with regard to equal rights and equal freedom of speech, and the idea of a kingly government which respects most of all the freedom of the governed ".

Josephus wrote all of his surviving works after his establishment in Rome ( c. AD 71 ) under the patronage of the Flavian Emperor Vespasian.

However, John A. T. Robinson and other scholars argued for a much earlier dating, based on the fact that the New Testament writings make no mention of ( 1 ) the Great Fire of Rome ( A. Lin also wrote to Queen Victoria, to submit in obeisance in the presence of the Chinese Emperor.

In keeping with this view of Frederick, his uncle, Otto of Freising, wrote an account of Frederick's reign entitled Gesta Friderici I imperatoris ( Deeds of the Emperor Frederick ).

It also states that he wrote two letters ( though the second letter, 2 Clement, is no longer ascribed to him ) and that he died in Greece in the third year of Emperor Trajan's reign, or 101 AD.
