The Engle Award honors an individual who, like Engle, longtime director of the Iowa Writers ' Workshop and co-founder of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, represents a pioneering spirit in the world of literature through writing, editing, publishing, or teaching, and whose active participation in the larger issues of the day has contributed to the betterment of the world through the literary arts.

From 1950 to 1953, Lowell taught in the well-reputed Iowa Writers ' Workshop at the University of Iowa, together with Paul Engle, Robie Macauley, and Anthony Hecht.

Ewbank was the head coach of Washington University in St. Louis for the 1947 and 1948 seasons before moving on to become the backfield coach for Charles " Rip " Engle at Brown University.

Engle received his commission in the Air Force through the Reserve Officers Training Program at the University of Kansas.

After serving as a test pilot in the Fighter Test Group at Edwards Air Force Base, California, Engle was a test pilot in the X-15 research program at Edwards from June 1963 until his assignment to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

On July 21, 2001, Engle was enshrined at Dayton, Ohio, in the National Aviation Hall of Fame class of 2001, along with USAF ace Robin Olds, Marine Corps ace Marion Carl, and Albert Ueltschi.

L ' Engle was reading about quantum physics at the time, which also made its way into the story.

In " A Special Message from Madeleine L ' Engle " on the Random House website, L ' Engle explains another possible reason for the rejections: " A Wrinkle in Time had a female protagonist in a science fiction book ," which at the time " wasn't done " according to L ' Engle.

Then at Christmas, L ' Engle threw a tea party for her mother.

Although the publisher did not at the time publish a line of children's books, Farrar met L ' Engle, liked the novel and ultimately published it.

Originally planning to be a lawyer, he instead signed on as an assistant football coach at Penn State in 1950, persuaded by his college coach Rip Engle who had taken over as Penn State's head coach.

The bipartisan Western Hemisphere Drug Policy Commission Act of 2009 ( sponsored by Rep. Engle ) was passed by the House on December 8, 2009 ; it would have taken a fresh look at the United States ' counter-narcotics efforts both at home and abroad.

In her book The Rock That Is Higher, L ' Engle mentions this concept, and the interdependency that is at the heart of A Wind in the Door:

In Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art, L ' Engle states that at one stage in the writing of A Wind in the Door, she knew who most of the characters would be, including Progo, the snake and " the three Mr. Jenkinses.

Engle has flown over 175 different types of aircraft ( 25 different fighters ) during his career: logging more than 15, 400 hours flight time ; 9, 000 in jet aircraft.

After building an estimated 2, 000 homes, Mort Engle sold his remaining to the U. S. Home Corporation and to the Federal Life Insurance Company and moved to Arizona.

The same words also form the first sentence of Madeleine L ' Engle ’ s Newbery Medal-winning novel A Wrinkle in Time.

Apollo flights 18 and 19 were cancelled in September 1970, but Schmitt was assigned in August 1971 to fly on the last lunar mission, Apollo 17, replacing Joe Engle as Lunar Module Pilot.

In October 2011 McPherson was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Paul Engle Award from the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature.

A business park built on Route 40 at the former site of the Bata Shoes factory opened in 2000, originally provided offices for Clark Turner Signature Homes and SURVICE Engineering.

In March 1951, Taca Homes offered expandable four-room Cape Cod style homes for sale in Wyandanch on a " non-racial " basis at the Carver Park development at Straight Path and Booker Avenue.

The federal prison was the largest employer in the city with 500 employees, followed by Liberty Homes with 100 employees at the manufactured homes builder.
