Electors were reichsstände ( Imperial Estates ), enjoying precedence over the other princes.

The political terms Left and Right were coined during the French Revolution ( 1789 – 1799 ), referring to the seating arrangement in the Estates General: those who sat on the left generally supported the radical changes of the revolution, including the creation of a republic and secularization, while those on the right were supportive of the traditional institutions of the Old Regime.

When the National Assembly was later created in June 1789 by the Third Estate, the clergy voted to join them, which perpetuated the destruction of the Estates General as a governing body.

The formalization of the struggles over taxation between the monarch and other elements of society ( especially the nobility and the cities ) gave rise to what is now called the Standestaat, or the state of Estates, characterized by parliaments in which key social groups negotiated with the king about legal and economic matters.

* In Sweden, the Riksdag of the Estates is replaced by an elected 2-chamber assembly, the Riksdag.

The Spanish Empire recognizes the Dutch Republic of United Netherlands as a sovereign state, ( governed by the House of Orange-Nassau and the Estates General ) which was previously a province of the Spanish Empire.

* May 10 – Gustav IV Adolf is officially deposed from the Swedish throne by the Riksdag of the Estates.

It was premiered by the Prague Italian opera at the Teatro di Praga ( now called the Estates Theatre ) on October 29, 1787.

On 2 November Bernadotte made his solemn entry into Stockholm, and on 5 November he received the homage of the Riksdag of the Estates, and he was adopted by King Charles XIII under the name of " Charles John " ( Karl Johan ).

In 1703, the Estates of Scotland responded to the Settlement by passing the Act of Security, which gave the Estates the power, if the Queen had no further children, to choose the next Scottish monarch from among the descendants of the royal line of Scotland.

The individual chosen by the Estates could not be the same person who came to the English throne, unless England granted full freedom of trade to Scottish merchants.
