* EuroCity trains ( EC )

An international variant of the InterCity are the EuroCity ( EC ) trains which were introduced in May 1987.

However, contrary to most other countries, these are often little more than regional rail, as most long-distance, high-standard trains in Austria are likely to be EuroCity ( EC ) services, even when not leaving the Austrian borders ( named ÖBB-EuroCity until 2011 ).

A pass will generally grant a passenger free transportation on an ordinary train ( for example, EuroCity trains and Regional ).

At the Vogelfluglinie route, EuroCity and ICE uses the train ferry from Rødby ( Denmark ) to Puttgarden on the island of Fehmarn ( Germany ), at this point the train proceeds via Lübeck and Hamburg to Berlin.
