A commission came in 1816 or 1817 from the family of the celebrated Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alva, for a painting of the Duke receiving papal honors for his repression of the Protestant Reformation.

Fernando de Alva Cortés Ixtlilxochitl, a Mexica descendant and the author of Codex Ixtlilxochitl, claimed that one in five children of the Mexica subjects was killed annually.

He is best remembered for his poetry, but according to accounts by his descendants and biographers, Fernando de Alva Cortés Ixtlilxochitl and Juan Bautista de Pomar, he had an experience of an " Unknown, Unknowable Lord of Everywhere " to whom he built an entirely empty temple in which no blood sacrifices of any kind were allowed — not even those of animals.

A legacy of the Spanish regime are unsigned portraits of Spanish conquistadors Hernando Cortés, Sebastian del Cano, Fernando Magallanes, and Cristóbal Colón, hung at the balcony around the stairs.

Some are civic or political events such as Independence Day or local celebrations such as the birth of poet Fernando Celada, the birth of Quirino Mendoza y Cortés, composer of “ Cielito Lindo ,” and the commemoration of the meeting of Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata on December 4 in this area.

There are also fairs dedicated to rabbits and poinsettias, as well as local civic celebrations to honor events such as the birth of poet Fernando Celada, the birth of Quirino Mendoza y Cortés, composer of “ Cielito Lindo ,” and the commemoration of the meeting of Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata on December 4 in this area.
