* 30 October in Kinshasa, Zaire – Muhammad Ali regained the World Heavyweight title by knocking out George Foreman in the eighth round of what was called The Rumble in the Jungle.

Along the way, he meets his old enemies from the original Wrecking Crew, including former rival Foreman Spike ( called Blackey in Japan ).

Writer, producer and partner Carl Foreman was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee while he was writing the film.

Ali blamed his poor performance on thyroid medication that he had been taking, claiming that it helped him lose weight ( he weighed 217½, his lowest weight since he fought George Foreman in 1974 ), but it also left him drained for the fight.

Holmes and George Foreman signed to fight on January 23, 1999 at the Houston Astrodome.

According to Ali's longtime physician and cornerman Ferdie Pacheco, it was believed by Ali and his trainers that Joe Frazier was washed up after his devastating loss to George Foreman, and the relative ease with which Ali had defeated Frazier in their rematch after that fight seemed to bear this out.

In 1978 on the undercard of the Larry Holmes / Ken Norton title fight Ocasio scored a major upset when he outpointed the highly regarded Jimmy Young, who'd outpointed George Foreman only a while back.

In 1976 Norton would again fight Ali, who was now the World Heavyweight Champion since regaining the title with an eighth round knockout of George Foreman in 1974.

Norton knocked out previously unbeaten top prospect Duane Bobick in one round and after despatching European title holder Lorenzo Zannon easily, he beat number two contender Jimmy Young ( who himself had beaten George Foreman and Jody Ballard ) in a 15-round split-decision in a WBC big mandatory title-elimination fight, with the winner to face reigning WBC champion Ali, but Ali's camp told Ring Magazine they did not want to fight Norton for a fourth time.

The film tells the story of boxing icon Muhammad Ali, played by Will Smith, from 1964 to 1974 featuring his capture of the heavyweight title from Sonny Liston ( Michael Bentt ), his conversion to Islam, criticism of the Vietnam War, banishment from boxing, his return to fight Joe Frazier ( James Toney ) in 1971, and, lastly, his reclaiming the title from George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle fight of 1974.

For a good portion of the fight against Foreman, Ali leans back against the ropes and covers up, letting Foreman wildly throw punches at him.

The Young-Foreman fight was somewhat steady until the sixth round when Foreman started throwing more power into his punches.

He managed to get Ali and Foreman to sign separate contracts saying they would fight for him if he could get a $ 5 million purse.

The fight was originally set to happen in September, but Foreman was injured and cut near his eye during training, pushing the fight back to October 30.

" According to Foreman, near the end of the fight, Foreman slammed Ali with a thundering body blow, and Ali whispered to him " Is that all you got, George?

As the fight drew into the eighth round, Foreman's punching and defense became ineffective as the strain of throwing so many wild shots took its toll, and Ali pounced as Foreman tried to pin him on the ropes, landing several right hooks over Foreman's jab followed by a 5-punch combination culminating in a left hook that brought Foreman's head up into position and a hard right straight to the face that caused him to stumble to the canvas.

Film of the Zaire fight shows Foreman striking Ali with hundreds of thunderous blows, many blocked, but many others getting through.

This fight has since become one of the most famous fights of all-time because it resulted in Ali, against the odds, regaining the title against a younger and stronger Foreman.

Foreman and Ali became friends after the fight.

George Foreman had his last fight ( and experienced the vision that led him to become a born-again Christian in one of its dressing rooms ) before announcing his first retirement there, and Julio César Chávez had one of his first important fights there, on the undercard of Edwin Rosario's world Lightweight championship win against José Luis Ramírez.

The New York Post film critic Jonathan Foreman was one of several focusing on this distortion in the film and wrote the following in an article at Salon. com:

The effects were visible as Foreman was staggered by an Ali combination at the start of the fourth round and again several times near the end of the fifth, after Foreman had seemed to dominate that round.

His activities have been attended by several celebrities, such as world champion boxers George Foreman, Evander Holyfield and Carlos Palomino, as well as a varied list of Hollywood actors.

Shavers has visited Ali several times and he says he, Ali, and George Foreman have become very good friends over the years.

His brother Jon Foreman is the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for Switchfoot with whom he has co-written several of the group's songs.

Tim Foreman has used several different amps and basses throughout his career with Switchfoot.

After outpointing slick stylist Jimmy Young ( who had defeated George Foreman ) on April 10, 1983, he was signed by Don King and began rising quickly up the rankings while appearing on several King undercards.
