Forever Changes is the third album by American rock band Love, released by Elektra Records in November 1967.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Forever Changes 40th in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

"' Forever Changes ' made only a minor dent on the charts when it was first released in 1967, but years later it became recognized as one of the finest and most haunting albums to come out of the Summer of Love, which doubtless has as much to do with the disc's themes and tone as the music, beautiful as it is ," wrote Mark Deming in an entry for the online Allmusic guide.

"' Forever Changes ' is also an album that heralds the last days of a golden age and anticipates the growing ugliness that would dominate the counterculture in 1968 and 1969 ... ' Forever Changes ' is inarguably Love's masterpiece and an album of enduring beauty, but it's also one of the few major works of its era that saw the dark clouds looming on the cultural horizon, and the result was music that was as prescient as it was compelling.

The remaining personnel performed on nine of the eleven tracks on Forever Changes.

" Lee also noted that since the name of the band was Love, the full title was " Love Forever Changes ".

" That was three different songs ... yet they were brought together to sound like one, which was fantastic ," lead guitarist John Echols said of " You Set The Scene " in the liner notes by Andrew Sandoval for the " Collector's Edition " of " Forever Changes " that was released by Rhino Records in 2008.

"... Arthur's genius lay in his ability to imagine songs, with fully formed lyrics and melodies ," wrote John Einarson in " Forever Changes: Arthur Lee and the Book of Love ," an authorized biography on Lee that was released in 2010.

" Forever Changes " was included in its entirety on the 2-CD retrospective Love compilation " Love Story 1966-1972 ", released by Rhino Records in 1995.

The album was re-released in an expanded single-CD version by Rhino in 2001, featuring alternate mixes, outtakes and the group's 1968 single, " Your Mind and We Belong Together "/" Laughing Stock ", the last tracks that featured the " Forever Changes " line-up of Johnny Echols, Ken Forssi, Michael Stuart and Bryan MacLean ( Forssi and MacLean both died in 1998 ).

" The Forever Changes Concert " was released in 2003 to great critical acclaim and marked the first time many of the songs had been performed live.

Both versions include the complete " Forever Changes " album.

" In the liner notes to both sets, David Sinclair wrote that "' Forever Changes ' has always held a place of honour in the hearts of British fans.

The second disc contains a previously unissued alternate mix of " Forever Changes " ( according to the liner notes, the original master of " Forever Changes " is missing, although the alternate mix was made from it at some point ).

The alternate mix of " Forever Changes " included in the second disc features a proto-rap by Lee on a slightly longer version of the album closer " You Set The Scene " that was edited out of the final version that was released commercially.

A Super High Material CD ( SHM-CD ) version of " Forever Changes " was released in Japan in 2009.

The version given the SHM-CD treatment was the 2001 expanded single disc release from Rhino Records featuring the original eleven songs from " Forever Changes " plus seven bonus tracks.

" Forever Changes ," with colorful, iconic cover art by Bob Pepper and Ronnie Haran's equally iconic photograph of the band on the back cover, was a commercial failure upon its release in the United States in late 1967.

In 1965 Lerner collaborated again with Burton Lane on the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, which was adapted for film in 1970.

In a 2001 retrospective review of " Forever Changes ," Andrew Cowen of The Birmingham Post ( UK ) wrote, " This 1967 masterpiece ... is the nearest the Americans came to having their own ' Sgt Pepper ' and, in true American style, it was largely overlooked by the mainstream audience which, at the time, was hanging on every note played by The Beatles.

The group were in the school of baroque-flavoured, melodic pop-rock music typified by the Beach Boys of Pet Sounds and God Only Knows, the Zombies of Odessey and Oracle and Time Of The Season, the Procol Harum of A Whiter Shade of Pale, the Moody Blues of Days of Future Passed and Nights in White Satin and the Kinks of Waterloo Sunset and the Love of Forever Changes.

The group had hoped to cover a number of different artists, but only two albums from this period saw completion and release-1984's George and James ( dedicated to George Gershwin and James Brown ) and 1986's Stars & Hank Forever: The American Composers Series ( featuring tributes to Hank Williams and John Philip Sousa ).

The following year, three diverse groups released songs: hard rock group LA Guns included " Ok, Let's Roll " in their album Waking the Dead, country music duo The Bellamy Brothers's song " Let's Roll, America " was on Redneck Girls Forever, and Christian rock group dc Talk reunited to record and release a single entitled " Let's Roll ".

This reformed group toured for several years, frequently performing Forever Changes in its entirety.

Even though group member Geri Halliwell had returned to the group at this point, she does not take part in this song as with " Let Love Lead the Way ", which signals her departure from the group in the concert's storyline ( performing " Viva Forever " when Geri is leveled under the stage ).

In 1972 Corea played many of the early Return to Forever songs in a group he put together for Stan Getz.

The Eurodance group Daze song entitled " Together Forever " uses many Tamagotchi references.

When Corea broke up the group, forming Return to Forever to pursue a fusion-based style of composition and recording, Holland and Altschul remained with Braxton for much of the 1970s as part of a quartet, with the rotating brass chair variously filled by trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, or trombonists George Lewis or Ray Anderson.
