He had disagreements with Erich Koch, the Gauleiter of East Prussia, and Adolf Hitler had to resolve the dispute between the two.

Erich Koch ( June 19, 1896 – November 12, 1986 ) was a Gauleiter of the Nazi Party ( NSDAP ) in East Prussia from 1928 until 1945.

Despite having detailed evacuation plans for some areas, authorities of the Third Reich, including the Gauleiter of East Prussia, Erich Koch, delayed action until January 20, when it was too late for an orderly evacuation, and the civil services were eventually overwhelmed by the huge number of those wishing to evacuate.

Initially, Erich Koch, the Gauleiter of East Prussia, did not agree to the evacuation of the civilians ( until 20 January 1945 ), and ordered that civilians trying to flee the region without permission would be instantly shot.

In response, Hitler outlined a series of criteria governing the awarding of this decoration and the philosophy of such awards, and directed that " prominent party comrades " were not to be awarded with the Knights Cross of the War Merit Cross ( or similar decorations ), and withdrew the proposed awards of this order to Gauleiter Erich Koch and State Secretary Karl Hanke.

The then civilian administrator of Luxembourg, Gauleiter Gustav Simon had declared conscription necessary to support the German war effort.

In occupied Pomerania, the Gauleiter of the Danzig-West Prussia region Albert Forster issued a secret order which mandated a creation of a list of people who were considered to be of German ethnicity, in 1941.

In Dresden, Gauleiter Martin Mutschmann let it be known that a large-scale German offensive on the Eastern Front was about to be launched.

For example, Albert Forster, Gauleiter of Danzig-West Prussia ( the other German-annexed section of occupied Poland ), simply declared all Poles in his area who were reasonably proficient in German to be Germans ( although he was guilty of the elimination of the Jewish population under his jurisdiction either by murder or deportation ).

In 1938, he took part in the German march into the Sudetenland, and in 1939, in the annexation of Bohemia and Moravia, and was later appointed political adviser to Gauleiter Fritz Sauckel in Thuringia.

Interior Minister Wilhelm Frick had long desired to streamline the German administration, and the Reichsgaue were the result: Party Gau and state administrative borders were to be identical, and the Party Gauleiter also occupied the post of Reichsstatthalter.

Robert Heinrich Wagner ( 13 October 1895 – 14 August 1946 ) was Gauleiter of Baden and Head of the Civil Government of Alsace during the German occupation of France in World War II.

Under his administration as the Gauleiter of Danzig-West Prussia during the Second World War, the local non-German population suffered ethnic cleansing, mass murder, and forceful Germanisation.

After the partition of this Gau, he was Gauleiter of Lower Bavaria from 1 October 1928 until 1929.

On 1 May 1939 Henlein was named Reichsstatthalter and Gauleiter of the newly established Reichsgau Sudetenland, a position he held until the end of the war.

Leonhardt became involved in politics in 1932 when he joined the National Front, and before long he had risen to the rank of Gauführer ( equivalent to Gauleiter ) in both Basel-City and the Canton of Solothurn.

He was an ancestor of Baldur von Schirach, onetime leader of the Hitler Youth and later Governor (" Gauleiter " or " Reichsstatthalter ") of the Reichsgau Vienna, who was convicted of " crimes against humanity " at the Nuremberg Trials, through Baldur Von Schirach's mother Emma Middleton Lynah Tillou ( 1872 – 1944 ).

Early in 1939, Odilo Globocnik, the Gauleiter of Vienna, established SS headquarters for all of Poland.

With the Nazi Party in charge of organizing the Volkssturm, each Gauleiter, or Nazi Party District Leader, was charged with the leadership, enrollment, and organization of the Volkssturm in their district.
