Attorney General Palmer made a series of raids that sent more than 4,000 so-called radicals to the jails, in direct violation of their constitutional rights.

The raids and arrests occurred in November 1919 and January 1920 under the leadership of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer.

In June 1919, Attorney General Palmer told the House Appropriations Committee that all evidence promised that radicals would " on a certain day … rise up and destroy the government at one fell swoop.

On August 1, 1919, Palmer put 24-year-old J. Edgar Hoover in charge of a new division of the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation, the General Intelligence Division.

As Attorney General Palmer struggled with exhaustion and devoted all his energies to the coal strike, Hoover organized the next raids.

" Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, who made notes of the conversation, thought the Attorney General had merited the President's " admonition ," because Palmer " was seeing red behind every bush and every demand for an increase in wages.

The drive against Post began to lose energy when Attorney General Palmer ’ s forecast of an attempted radical uprising on May Day 1920 failed to occur.

The Denver and Rio Grande Railway ( D & RG ) was incorporated on October 27, 1870 by General William Jackson Palmer and a board of four directors.

By mid 1883, financial difficulties due to aggressive growth and expenditures led to a shake up among the D & RG board of directors, and General Palmer resigned as president of the D & RG in August 1883, while retaining that position with the Western.

The main beneficiaries of his will were his nephew, Peregrine Palmer Fuller Palmer Acland ( 1789 – 1871 ) and General Sir Augustus Elliot Fuller ( 1777 – 1857 ) who was John Fuller's first cousin once removed.

Colorado College was founded in 1874 on land designated by U. S. Civil War veteran General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and of Colorado Springs.

Among the reasons why he did not become the candidate were rivals for the nomination, his obvious political inexperience, and the strong support he gave for the anti-Communist strategy of Democratic Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer to defeat radical subversion.

During the Red Scare of 1918 – 19, in response to the 1919 anarchist bombings aimed at prominent government officials and businessman, U. S. Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, supported by J. Edgar Hoover, then head of the Justice Department's Enemy Aliens Registration Section, used the Sedition Act, a 1918 amendment to the Espionage Act, to deport several hundred foreign citizens, including Emma Goldman, to the Soviet Union on a ship the press called the " Soviet Ark ".

It argued, inter alia, that a divestiture order would severely depress the market value of the stock of both General Motors and Du Pont, with consequent serious loss and hardship to hundreds of thousands of innocent investors, among them thousands of small trusts and charitable institutions ; ;

that the tremendous volume of General Motors stock hanging over the market for ten years would hamper the efforts of General Motors and other automobile manufacturers to raise equity capital ; ;

General Motors comprehensively contended that the Government plan would not be `` in the public interest '' as required by the mandate of this Court.
