Many of Gladys Knight and the Pips ' hits in the mid-1970s were written by country songwriter Jim Weatherly.

Gladys Knight & the Pips ' debut LP on Buddah, Imagination, was certified as a gold record.

The following year, the group got their own hour-long musical variety television program, The Gladys Knight & the Pips Show, which ran for four episodes on NBC as a summer-season replacement.

In 1977, the Pips ( minus Gladys ) appeared on comedian Richard Pryor's TV special that aired on NBC.

Gladys Knight & the Pips embarked on their final tour in 1988 and disbanded upon its conclusion, as Gladys Knight decided she wanted to pursue a solo career.

She is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, for both the Motown and Buddah Records labels, with her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, the most famous incarnation of which also included her brother Merald " Bubba " Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Guest.

After her contract was sold to Janus Records, Houston recorded several more singles in the early 1970s and another album, which included the original recording of Jim Weatherly's " Midnight Train to Georgia ", later a number one hit for Gladys Knight & The Pips.

Russ Columbo composed the songs " Prisoner of Love ", " You Call It Madness ( But I Call It Love )" with Con Conrad, Gladys Du Bois, and Paul Gregory, " Too Beautiful For Words ", recorded by the Teddy Joyce Orchestra in 1935, " When You're in Love ", " My Love ", " Let's Pretend There's a Moon ", recorded by Fats Waller and Tab Hunter, and " Hello Sister ".

After recording the song with Marvin Gaye in 1967, which Gordy also rejected, Whitfield recorded a version with Gladys Knight & the Pips, which Gordy agreed to release as a single in September 1967, and which went to number two in the Billboard chart.

In 1968 Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers recorded a version for their debut album based on Gladys ' recent hit ; though, after hearing the Marvin Gaye version, they felt they'd made the wrong choice.

Gladys Knight was not pleased that Gaye's version usurped her own, and claimed that Gaye's version was recorded over an instrumental track Whitfield had prepared for a Pips song, an allegation Gaye denied.
