Hugh Marjoe Ross Gortner ( generally known as Marjoe Gortner ; born 14 January 1944 in Long Beach, California ) is a former revivalist and actor who first gained attention during the late 1940s when, aged four, he became the youngest-known ordained preacher.

In the late 1960s, Gortner suffered a crisis of conscience about his double life and felt his performing talents might be put to better use as an actor or singer.

During the late 1970s, Gortner attempted to self-finance a pseudo-fictional film drama about an evangelistic con-man based in part on his own life experiences.

Directed by Mark Robson and with a screenplay by George Fox and Mario Puzo, the film starred a large cast of well-known actors, including Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, George Kennedy, Lorne Greene, Geneviève Bujold, Richard Roundtree, Marjoe Gortner, Barry Sullivan, Lloyd Nolan, Victoria Principal, Monica Lewis and ( under an alias ) Walter Matthau.

While that film featured a larger " all star " cast ( in fact, Universal had approached several, including Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, to star in Earthquake-but they had already been signed for Inferno ), Universal was able to land Charlton Heston in the lead role, along with Ava Gardner ( who signed at the proverbial " 11th hour " simply because she wanted to spend the summer in Los Angeles ), George Kennedy, Lorne Greene, Geneviève Bujold ( who agreed to a part in the film to head off an impending lawsuit by Universal over a prior project ), Richard Roundtree ( riding a wave of success from the Shaft film series ), former evangelical Marjoe Gortner as an antagonist, and newcomer Victoria Principal.

After quitting that job, she became interested in documentary filmmaking and soon gained national prominence in the United States as co-director and co-producer with Howard Smith of the 1972 film Marjoe ( about evangelist Marjoe Gortner ), which won an Academy Award for Documentary Feature.

Gortner hosted an early-1980s reality TV series called Speak Up, America, ironically playing a terrorist preacher in a 2nd Season episode of Airwolf, and appeared on Falcon Crest as corrupt psychic-cum-medium " Vince Karlotti " ( 1986 – 87 ) before ending his movie career in 1995 with an appearance as a preacher in the western Wild Bill.

The film was never distributed in the Bible Belt, as Gortner exposed the money-making tricks charlatan evangelists engaged in.

After leaving the revival circuit, Gortner attempted to break into both Hollywood and the recording industry.
