On July 21, 1961, Grissom was pilot of the second Project Mercury flight, Mercury-Redstone 4, popularly known as Liberty Bell 7.

In March 1966 he was selected as Senior Pilot ( second seat ) for the first manned Apollo flight, designated AS-204, along with Command Pilot Virgil " Gus " Grissom, who had flown in space on the Mercury 4 Liberty Bell 7 mission and as commander of the Gemini 3 Molly Brown mission, and Pilot Roger Chaffee, who had yet to fly into space.

The Virgil I. Gus Grissom Memorial, located just inside of Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell, contains many mementos of Grissom's career, including the space capsule he commanded, " The Molly Brown ", from Gemini 3, and the space suit worn during his Mercury Liberty Bell 7 mission.

It is the birthplace of astronaut Gus Grissom, who flew on Liberty Bell 7, Gemini 3, and died in a launch pad fire at Kennedy Space Center in 1967.

Gus Grissom was the second American to fly in space on Liberty Bell 7 and also flew aboard Gemini 3.

Grissom was one of the smaller astronauts, and he worked very closely with the engineers and technicians from McDonnell Aircraft who built the Gemini spacecraft.

During this time Grissom invented the multi-axis translation thruster controller used to push the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft in linear directions for rendezvous and docking.

In a joking nod to the sinking of his Mercury craft Grissom named the first Gemini spacecraft Molly Brown after the popular Broadway show The Unsinkable Molly Brown ; NASA publicity officials were unhappy with this name.

Grissom died while putting the finishing touches on Gemini: A Personal Account of Man's Venture Into Space ; he had been heavily involved in the engineering of the spacecraft.

The spacecraft is on display within the Grissom Memorial of Spring Mill State Park, two miles east of Grissom's hometown of Mitchell, Indiana.

Making the first manned flight of the Gemini spacecraft with Gus Grissom in 1965, Young scored another space " first " by smuggling a corned beef sandwich onto the spacecraft — a feat for which he was reprimanded.

McDivitt must have switched to the VOX setting somewhere around the time White was exiting the spacecraft, because at that point, for most of the EVA, neither he nor White responded either to the Hawaii CAPCOM, or to the Houston CAPCOM, Gus Grissom.

Gemini 4's crew originally intended to call their spacecraft American Eagle, but this was rejected after NASA management issued a memo saying that they did not want a repeat performance of the previous mission, on which Gus Grissom had named his spacecraft Molly Brown.

In addition, astronaut Gus Grissom was heavily involved in the development and design of the Gemini spacecraft.

The memorial features the spacecraft from Grissom's Gemini 3 space flight, nicknamed by Grissom the " Molly Brown " ( after the play The Unsinkable Molly Brown ), as well as a short video about the life of Grissom, and artifacts such as a space suit, helmet, and many personal effects.

During the 2008 regular season, the first ever outdoor professional basketball game in North America was played at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York between the New York Liberty and the Indiana Fever in front of over 19, 000 fans.

The Liberty played their first game in front of 5, 945 fans against the Detroit Shock in July 2004.
