Guy Fawkes ( 13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606 ), also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Gunpowder, also known since the late 19th century as black powder, was the first chemical explosive and the only one known until the mid-1800s.

Gunpowder was, according to prevailing academic consensus, discovered in the 9th century in China, attributed to Chinese alchemists searching for an elixir of immortality.

Gunpowder was widely used to fill artillery shells and in mining and civil engineering to blast rock roughly until the second half of the 19th century, when the first high explosives ( nitro-explosives ) were discovered.

In the 2005 ITV programme The Gunpowder Plot: Exploding The Legend, a full-size replica of the House of Lords was built and destroyed with barrels of gunpowder.

Gunpowder was widely used as early as the 11th century and they were using moveable type printing five hundred years before Gutenberg created his press.

Gunpowder ( black powder ) as described in this article is not normally used in modern firearms — which instead use smokeless powders.

Gunpowder is no longer used in modern explosive military warheads, nor is it used as main explosive in mining operations due to its cost relative to that of newer alternatives such as ammonium nitrate / fuel oil ( ANFO ).
