Gustave Albin Whitehead, born Gustav Albin Weisskopf ( 1 January 1874 – 10 October 1927 ) was an aviation pioneer who emigrated from Germany to the U. S., where he designed and built early flying machines and engines meant to power them from about 1897 to 1915.

He soon anglicized his name to Gustave Whitehead.

Randolph expanded the article into a book, " Lost Flights of Gustave Whitehead ," published in 1937.

O ' Dwyer later contributed to a second book by Stella Randolph, The Story of Gustave Whitehead, Before the Wrights Flew, published in 1966.

* 17 January – Gustave Whitehead claims a circling 11 km ( 7 mi ) flight over water in a 40 hp-29. 9-kW-engine-powered flying machine with wheels and an amphibious boat-shaped hull, reportedly rebuilt from the Whitehead Aeroplane No. 21 of 1901.

* 14 August – In Fairfield, Connecticut, Gustave Whitehead reportedly flies his engine-powered Whitehead No. 21 folding-wing, rudderless, flying machine 800 meters ( 2, 625 feet ) at an altitude of 15 meters ( 49 feet ), according to an article in the Bridgeport Herald.

Many German-Americans translated their names or altered them to resemble English names ( a trend which had begun in the 19th century, e. g. Gustave Whitehead ).

In January 1914, Gustave Delage joined the company, and began, with a variant of the type 10 parasol monoplane to which he added a small set of lower wings, to develop the brilliant sesquiplanes ( an " almost biplane " with a full upper wing and a single-spar, half-chord lower wing ) for which the Nieuport company would become famous during World War I.
