In 1609, the Dutch East India Company hired Hudson, gave him two learned geographers, fitted him out with a ship called the Half Moon, and supplied him with Dutch sailors.

When the Half Moon put in at Dartmouth, England, in the fall of 1609, word of Hudson's findings leaked out, and English interest in him revived.

On the third voyage, a near-mutiny rising from a quarrel between Dutch and English crew members on the Half Moon had almost forced him to head the ship back to Amsterdam in Mid-Atlantic.

The mate, Robert Juet, who had kept the journal on the Half Moon, was experienced -- but he was a bitter old man, ready to complain or desert at any opportunity.

Douglas Hunter, in Half Moon ( 2009 ), believes Hudson may not have mentioned his supposed discovery of the island because he was " loath to address a crew insurrection that might well have erupted at that time, when the men realized where he was trying to take them.

The tower stood on the site of the present Half Moon Battery, and was connected by a section of curtain wall to the smaller Constable's Tower, a round tower built between 1375 and 1379 where the Portcullis Gate now stands.

Real growth in the area came after World War II with the construction of numerous subdivisions, eventually leading to the incorporation of Half Moon Bay in 1959.

Due to the financial setbacks from a large legal settlement and a poor economy, Half Moon Bay is currently considering major cuts to city services and possibly disincorporating.

Under a disincorporation plan, Half Moon Bay would revert to an unincorporated area within San Mateo County.

Current Half Moon Bay residents would remain responsible for the bond payments resulting from the legal settlement, which would be added as a lien on their properties.
