Mad is an American humor magazine founded by editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines in 1952.

Written almost entirely by Harvey Kurtzman, the first issue also featured illustrations by Kurtzman himself, along with Wally Wood, Will Elder, Jack Davis and John Severin.

Its approach was described by Dave Kehr in The New York Times: " Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding on the radio, Ernie Kovacs on television, Stan Freberg on records, Harvey Kurtzman in the early issues of Mad: all of those pioneering humorists and many others realized that the real world mattered less to people than the sea of sounds and images that the ever more powerful mass media were pumping into American lives.

Among the loudest of those who insist the magazine is no longer funny are supporters of Harvey Kurtzman, who had the good critical fortune to leave Mad after just 28 issues, before his own formulaic tendencies might have become obtrusive.

In 2009, an interviewer proposed to Al Jaffee, " There's a group of Mad afficionados who feel that if Harvey Kurtzman had stayed at Mad, the magazine would not only have been different, but better.

" Jaffee, a Kurtzman enthusiast, replied, " And then there's a large group who feel that if Harvey had stayed with Mad, he would have upgraded it to the point that only fifteen people would buy it.

During high school, he began to avidly read Mad magazine, which was then edited by Harvey Kurtzman ; this later influenced his work.

Bakshi enlisted comic book and pulp fiction artists and writers Harvey Kurtzman, Lin Carter, Gray Morrow, Archie Goodwin, Wally Wood and Jim Steranko to work at the studio.

Crumb has cited Carl Barks, who illustrated Disney's " Donald Duck " comic books and John Stanley ( Little Lulu ) as formative influences on his narrative approach, as well as Harvey Kurtzman.

With Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Gary Panter, and Chris Ware, Crumb was among the artists honored in the exhibition " Masters of American Comics " at the Jewish Museum in New York City, New York, from September 16, 2006 to January 28, 2007.

Regular contributors included Wally Wood, Jack Davis, Will Elder, George Evans, Harry Harrison, Graham Ingels, Al Williamson, Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Jack Kamen, Bernard Krigstein, John Severin, Joe Orlando and Frank Frazetta, along with editor / artists Harvey Kurtzman and Al Feldstein.

Gaines converted Mad to a magazine in 1955, partly to retain the services of its talented editor Harvey Kurtzman, who had received offers from elsewhere.

In Mad # 4 ( April – May 1953 ), The Shadow was spoofed by Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder.

His editors, Al Feldstein and Harvey Kurtzman, who also drew covers and stories, gave assignments to such prominent and highly accomplished freelance artists as Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Will Elder, George Evans, Frank Frazetta, Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen, Bernard Krigstein, Joe Orlando, John Severin, Al Williamson, Basil Wolverton, and Wally Wood.

Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood satirized the strip in Mad as " Little Orphan Melvin ", and later Kurtzman produced a long-running series for Playboy, Little Annie Fanny, in which the lead character is a busty, voluptuous waif who continually loses her clothes and falls into strange sexual situations.

Schwartz and writer-editor Harvey Kurtzman were awarded the 2006 Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing.

A compromise was reached, and starting in 1988, the Kirby Award was discontinued and two new awards were created: the Eisner Award, managed by Olbrich ; and the Fantagraphics-managed Harvey Award, named for cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman.

" ( 1947 ) and " Little Fanny Gooney " ( 1952 ), were almost certainly an inspiration to Harvey Kurtzman when he created his irreverent Mad, which began in 1952 as a comic book that specifically parodied other comics in the same subversive manner.

In the fall of 1956, shortly after the departure of Mads founding editor Harvey Kurtzman, Drucker found his way to Mad.

Adams was inducted into the Eisner Award's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Harvey Awards ' Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999.

Harvey also collaborated with Miles on another film, Amaeru Fallout 1972, which includes Harvey performing a cover of " When Will I See You Again.

Upon his release he associated himself with a circle of criminals, most notably his closest friend Elzy Lay, Harvey " Kid Curry " Logan, Ben Kilpatrick, Harry Tracy, Will " News " Carver, Laura Bullion, and George Curry, who, together with others, formed a gang known as the Wild Bunch, and with this his criminal activity increased considerably.

However, Graham's doctrines found later followers in the persons of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Will Keith Kellogg.

The game was developed by Will Harvey, Ian Gooding, Jim Nitchals, and Douglas Fulton.

Kellogg's was founded as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company on February 19, 1906, by Will Keith Kellogg as an outgrowth of his work with his brother John Harvey Kellogg at the Battle Creek Sanitarium following practices based on the Seventh-day Adventist Christian denomination.

By 1990 the mill, owned by NZ Forest Products, had become a division of Elder Resources, until it was taken over by Carter Holt Harvey in 1991.

William Elder ( September 22, 1921 – May 14, 2008 ) was an American illustrator and comic book artist who worked in numerous areas of commercial art but is best known for a zany cartoon style that helped launch Harvey Kurtzman's Mad comic book in 1952.

The Mole Man was originally Harvey Rupert Elder, an American nuclear engineer and explorer.

Little Annie Fanny is a comic series created by Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder that debuted in the October 1962 issue of the men's magazine Playboy.

Clarke was one of the artists who took up the slack after original editor Harvey Kurtzman left Mad, taking two of its three primary artists ( Will Elder and Jack Davis ) with him.
