After his education, Alexei married, albeit greatly against his will Princess Charlotte of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, whose family was connected by marriage to many of the great families of Europe i. e., Charlotte's sister Elizabeth was married to Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, ruler of the Habsburg Monarchy.

Boyle was born at Canterbury 3 October 1566, the second son of Roger Boyle ( d. 24 March 1576 at Preston, near Faversham in Kent ), a descendant of an ancient landed Herefordshire family, and of Joan ( born 15 October 1529 at Canterbury-died 20 March 1586 ), daughter of John Naylor, who were married in Canterbury on 16 October 1564.

Devonshire married Charlotte Boyle, 6th Baroness Clifford, daughter of the famous architect Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington ( on whose death in 1753 the earldom of Burlington became extinct ).

The castle ( along with other Boyle properties-Chiswick House, Burlington House, Bolton Abbey and Londesborough Hall ) was acquired by the Cavendish family in 1753 when the daughter and heiress of the 4th Earl of Cork, Lady Charlotte Boyle ( 1731-1754 ) married William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, a future Prime Minister of Great Britain & Ireland.

His son Arthur married Ellen Barry, granddaughter of Richard Boyle who during his life held many land titles in West Kerry and who also claimed property in Tralee.

The dead included Jeannie Boyle, who had gone to the match with her fiancé and was due to be married five days later, and two boys aged 10 and 11.

She married at Limerick on 6 November 1595, Richard Boyle, she being 17 and he 28.

On 22 January 1878 he married Hannah ( Anna ) Johnson Boyle ( 1855 – 1925 ), the youngest daughter of Edward Boyle, a mechanical engineer from Edinburgh and his wife, Mary Ann née Mackie.
