The first attempt at legislation was drafted by the President of the Board of Control, Lord Ellenborough, who had previously served as Governor-General of India ( 1841 – 44 ).

Later in the war he succeeded Jellicoe as Commander in Chief of the Grand Fleet, in which capacity he received the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet at the end of hostilities, and then in the 1920s he served a lengthy term as First Sea Lord ( head of the Royal Navy ).

Afterwards, he served a lengthy term as First Sea Lord until 1927.

George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen ( 28 January 1784 – 14 December 1860 ), styled Lord Haddo from 1791 to 1801, was a British politician and landowner, successively a Tory, Conservative and Peelite, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1852 until 1855.

Lord Aberdeen served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster between January and June 1828 and subsequently as Foreign Secretary until 1830 under the Duke of Wellington. He resigned with Wellington over the Reform Bill of 1832.

Henry Austin Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare GCB, PC, FRS ( 16 April 1815 – 25 February 1895 ) was a British Liberal Party politician, who served in government most notably as Home Secretary ( 1868 – 1873 ) and as Lord President of the Council.

Jellicoe later served as First Sea Lord ( professional head of the Royal Navy ), but he was removed at the end of 1917 because of differences over policy regarding the war against the U-Boats and his perceived pessimism about Britain's ability to carry on the war.

Lord Rayleigh was elected Fellow of the Royal Society on 12 June 1873, and served as president of the Royal Society from 1905 to 1908.

James the Just, known as " the brother of the Lord ", served as head of the Jerusalem church, which is still honored as the " Mother Church " in Orthodox tradition.

The ninety-two room building formerly served as the ' out-of-season ' residence of the Irish Lord Lieutenant and the residence of two of the three Irish Governors-General: Tim Healy and James McNeill.

This building would have been well known to More, who served as Speaker of the House of Commons prior to becoming Lord Chancellor of England.

Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook | Lord Beaverbrook served as Chancellor of the University of New Brunswick and became the university's greatest benefactor.

The Duke at the time, the founder and colonel of the regiment, was the Duchess of Richmond's father, and he saw no active service overseas during the Napoleonic Wars ; his son and the Duchess's brother, the Marquis of Huntly ( later the 5th Duke ) was a distinguished general, but also missed the Waterloo campaign ; the senior representative of the family at the battle was in fact the Duchess's own twenty-three-year-old son, the Earl of March, who would eventually become the 5th Duke's heir in 1836, and who served as a major and an aide de camp to the Duke of Wellington ; another branch of the family was represented by another ADC, Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon, aged twenty-eight or twenty-nine, the brother of the Earl of Aberdeen ; in reality, both were young men similar in age and duty to Lord Hay.

Howe served as First Lord of the Admiralty in the government of William Pitt the Younger | William Pitt ( above ) between 1783 and 1788.

From 1783 until 1788, he served as First Lord of the Admiralty during the Younger Pitt's first ministry.

His father, who, as heir to the 4th Earl of Rosebery, was known by the courtesy title of Lord Dalmeny, was MP for Stirling from 1832 to 1847 and served as First Lord of the Admiralty under Lord Melbourne.

Grenville's cousin William Windham served as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, and his younger brother, Thomas Grenville, served briefly as First Lord of the Admiralty.

His father, a political advisor to Frederick, Prince of Wales and King George III, served briefly in the Cabinet as First Lord of the Admiralty.

Lord Longford served in the Labour administrations of Clement Attlee and Harold Wilson as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, First Lord of the Admiralty, Lord Privy Seal, Leader of the House of Lords and Secretary of State for the Colonies.

Sandwich served again as First Lord of the Admiralty in Lord North's administration from 1771 to 1782.

His great-grandson, the fourth Earl, was a prominent statesman and served as First Lord of the Admiralty and as Secretary of State for the Northern Department.

Hawke also served as First Lord of the Admiralty for five years between 1766 and 1771.

Wood later served as President of the Board of Control under Lord Aberdeen ( 1852 – 1855 ), as First Lord of the Admiralty in Lord Palmerston's first administration ( 1855 – 1858 ), and as Secretary of State for India in Palmerston's second government ( 1859 – 1866 ).
