Eileen Heckart ( March 29, 1919 – December 31, 2001 ) was an American actress of film, stage, and television.

Heckart was born Anna Eileen Herbert in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Esther Stark, who wed Leo Herbert at her own mother's insistence so her child would not be born with the stigma of illegitimacy.

Heckart, whose surname she was known by her whole life.

Heckart won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1972 movie adaptation of Butterflies Are Free and was nominated in 1956 for her performance as the bereaved, besotted Mrs. Daigle in The Bad Seed.

Heckart was familiar to television audiences with starring roles in The Five Mrs. Buchanans, Annie McGuire, Out of the Blue, Trauma Center, Partners in Crime, Backstairs at the White House ( Emmy nomination as Eleanor Roosevelt ), and guest spots on The Fugitive, The Mary Tyler Moore Show ( two Emmy nominations as journalist Flo Meredith, a role she carried over to a guest appearance on MTM's spinoff Lou Grant ), Rhoda, Alice, Murder One, Hawaii Five-O, Gunsmoke, Cybill, The Cosby Show, and many other shows.

In 2005, the Eileen Heckart Drama for Seniors Competition was established in her memory by Ohio State's Department of Theatre.

More recently, she was seen on One Life to Live ( 1993 ), replacing fellow stage legend Eileen Heckart as Wilma Bern.

Despite the show's connection with The Mary Tyler Moore Show, none of that series ' other regular characters ever appeared ( and were not referred to onscreen ); the only other " crossover " character was MTM recurring character Flo Meredith ( Eileen Heckart ) ( Mary Richards ' aunt ), a churlish veteran journalist with whom Lou had had a brief fling while in Minneapolis, and who appeared on a single episode of Lou Grant.

This production was directed by Martin Ritt and the cast included Van Heflin as Eddie and Eileen Heckart as Beatrice.

Heckart began her Broadway career as the assistant stage manager and an understudy for The Voice of the Turtle in 1943.

Heckart played Diane Keaton's meddling mother in the 1996 comedy film The First Wives Club.

Heckart played two unrelated characters on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live.

On December 31, 2001, Heckart died of lung cancer at her home in Norwalk, Connecticut at the age of 82.

She established the " Eileen Heckart Collection " at Ohio State University's Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute, with her notes, copies of scripts, and personal papers.

Heckart has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6162 Hollywood Blvd.

He went out with a woman named Charlene ( Sheree North ; Janis Paige in " Menage-a-Lou " of Season 6 ) in particularly Season 5 ; Mary's best friend Rhoda Morgenstern in Season 4 ; Mary's next-door neighbor, Paula Kovacks ( Penny Marshall ) in Season 6 ; Mary's Aunt Flo ( Eileen Heckart ) in Seasons 6 and 7 ; and even with Mary herself in the penultimate episode.
