Betruger, however, tells the marine that although the main UAC teleporter has been destroyed, Hell is opening a Hellmouth on Mars, capable of bringing millions of demons to Mars.

Sunnydale High School is situated atop a portal to hell called a Hellmouth, which Whedon uses to symbolize the high-school-as-hell experience.

The Master is first seen in the series premiere " Welcome to the Hellmouth ", which was aired immediately before the second episode " The Harvest ", which reveals more of the Master's character and backstory.

In " Welcome to the Hellmouth " the Master is presented as one of the " old ones " a vampire with extraordinary physical and mental powers, but weakened through long isolation and needing to feed on people ; he is raised from a pool of blood by his acolyte Luke ( Brian Thompson ).

In the second season, it becomes clear that the authorities at Sunnydale High School — under which a portal to hell called a Hellmouth is situated — are aware of the perpetual influence of evil at the school and have been reporting events to the Mayor's office.

She learns how the Slayers were created and is shown a vision which reveals the First's massive army of Turok-Han Vampires in the Hellmouth.

At the start of the television series Buffy and her mother Joyce, who has divorced Buffy's father, move to a new town named Sunnydale where Buffy is to attend Sunnydale High School, which, unknown to her, is situated on a portal to hell, called a Hellmouth.

Joyce responds to the dire situations Buffy must face by placing regular and inconvenient restrictions on her, such as grounding her at a time when Buffy must confront and try to kill the Master ( the head of a vampire cult who is attempting to fulfill a prophecy that he will kill the Slayer and open the Hellmouth in Sunnydale ), saying sarcastically to Buffy, " I know — if you don't go out it'll be the end of the world ", when in fact, it just may be, or telling Buffy that she is free to make her own life choices, when Buffy knows exactly what her destiny is, and that it may include dying young.

* Also, in this episode, it is shown that Snyder and at least part of the police force are aware that Sunnydale is built on a Hellmouth.

He notes that the principal's office is right over the Hellmouth.

Like Andrew, Robin is in charge of a squad of slayers, and is shown to be working at the Hellmouth in Cleveland.

Long before humans settled the area, an entrance to the Hellmouth existed at the site of the future town of Sunnydale.

Soon thereafter, the cataclysmic showdown between the Scooby Gang and the First Evil results in the complete obliteration of the town, which collapses into a giant pit, closing the entrance to the Hellmouth.

Satan himself is often shown sitting in Hell eating the damned, but according to G. D. Schmidt this is a separate image, and the Hellmouth should not be considered to be the mouth of Satan, although Hofmann is inclined to disagree with this.

In late medieval works by Hieronymous Bosch and his followers, where the wide interior of Hell is shown, there is often a Hellmouth leading to some special compartment.

* Austin Simmons, The Cipherment of the Franks Casket ( PDF ) Hellmouth ( or the whale as constituting Hell ) is inferred in the inscription on the front side of the Franks Casket.

Those on the other side are deemed unworthy of Heaven, usually seized by demons and brought into the Hellmouth, beyond which, mostly out of sight, lie the bowels of Hell.

Meanwhile, Buffy, Angel, Faith, Giles and Willow are at the library fending off the giant multi-headed monster and the members of the group of female demons and successfully close the Hellmouth.

* The multi-headed monster is the same monster that attacked Giles, Willow, Cordelia and Jenny in the library when the Master's ascension opened the Hellmouth in " Prophecy Girl ".

The Master's death caused the monster to retreat back into the Hellmouth.

Anglo-Saxon iconographical innovations include the animal Hellmouth, the ascending Christ shown only as a pair of legs and feet disappearing at the top of the image, the horned Moses, St John the Evangelist standing at the foot of the cross and writing, and God the Father creating the world with a pair of compasses.

After Sunnydale collapses into the Hellmouth, Andrew Wells comforts Xander by telling him that Anya had died saving his life, to which Xander tearfully replies, " That's my girl, always doing the stupid thing.

Bleeding Spike, it was able to open the Hellmouth and release a Turok-Hun, an ancient primeval uber-vampire, which it sent after Buffy and company.

The seeds of this plot are planted in the finale of Season Four of the series when Angel is given the amulet which Spike eventually uses to destroy the Hellmouth in Sunnydale.

* That much of Buffy's pleasure comes from her sense of being a " normal girl falling asleep in the arms of her normal boyfriend " underscores one of the Slayer's fundamental internal conflicts, which she first expresses to Giles in the Buffy premiere, " Welcome to the Hellmouth ", and essentially resolves in the series finale, " Chosen ".

* In keeping with this season's theme of going " back to the beginning ", in the shot right before the opening credits Buffy greets Rona by saying " Welcome to the Hellmouth ", which is the same as the title of the first episode of the series.

* Buffy's response to Wood regarding the Hellmouth " blowing around May " is referencing the fact that the apocalypses usually occur as the season finales, which tend to air in May.

Meanwhile, back at the library, Willow and Giles, in an attempt to get werewolf-Oz away from the location in which the Hellmouth will soon be opening, open his cage so that they can sedate him and move him to the school basement.

Sam explains that the Suvolte demon, which multiplies quickly and can destroy towns full of people in no time, has come to the Hellmouth to lay a nest full of its offspring.

During their argument over which of them has helped save the world more times, Angel and Spike refer to the events of " Prophecy Girl " and " The Zeppo " ( in which Angel helped to close the Hellmouth ), " Doomed " and " Chosen " ( in which Spike did so ), " Graduation Day, Part Two " ( in which Angel helped to defeat the Mayor ), " Peace Out " ( in which Angel Investigations defeated Jasmine ) and " Becoming, Part Two " ( in which Spike conspired with Buffy Summers so that she could kill Angelus before he could awaken the demon Acathla ).
