Heshbon ( also Hesebon, Esebon, Esbous, Esebus ; ; ; ) was an ancient town located east of the Jordan River in the modern Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and historically within the territories of Ammon and Ancient Israel.

That these limits were not fixed, however, is plain from the lists of cities given in and Jeremiah xlviii., where Heshbon, Elealeh, and Jazer are mentioned to the north of Beth-jeshimoth ; Madaba, Beth-gamul, and Mephaath to the east of Baalmeon ; and Dibon, Aroer, Bezer, Jahaz, and Kirhareseth to the south of Kiriathaim.

A city mentioned along with Heshbon by Jeremiah 49: 3, whose location is currently unknown, may or may not be the same as the city mentioned in the Book of Joshua.
