Hippolytus of Rome ( d. 235 ) is commonly considered to be the earliest antipope, as he headed a separate group within the Church in Rome against Pope Callixtus I. Hippolytus was reconciled to Callixtus's second successor, Pope Pontian, and both he and Pontian are honoured as saints by the Roman Catholic Church with a shared feast day on 13 August.

Before the fourth century we find allusions to the evening prayer in the earlier Fathers, Clement I of Rome ( Clemens Romanus ), St. Ignatius, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen, the Canons of St. Hippolytus, St. Cyprian ( for texts see Bäumer-Biron, l. c., I, 20 sqq., 73-4, 76, 78 ).

At times the passion could occur after the initial meeting, as, for example, in Phraedra's letter to Hippolytus in Ovid's Heroides: " That time I went to Eleusis ... it was then most of all ( though you had pleased me before ) that piercing love lodged in my deepest bones.

In the canons of Hippolytus in the first half of the 3rd century we find this direction: Let presbyters, subdeacons and readers, and all the people assemble daily in the church at time of cockcrow, and betake themselves to prayers, to psalms and to the reading of the Scriptures, according to the command of the Apostles, until I come attend to reading ( canon xxi.

Surviving traditions about Simon appear in anti-heretical texts, such as those of Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, Hippolytus, and Epiphanius, where he is often regarded as the source of all heresies.

The great difference between the earlier and the later treatise of Hippolytus is that the former was a mere compilation, his account of the opinions of heresies being in the main derived from the lectures of Irenaeus ; but at the time of writing the latter, he had himself read several heretical writings, of which he gives an extract in his treatise.

The Naassene Fragment is a fragmentary text that survives in no document save a quotation in the early third century encyclopedia of heresies by Hippolytus of Rome, Refutation of All Heresies ( 5. 7. 2-9 ).

One of the sources of Epiphanius, the lost Syntagma of Hippolytus of Rome, was also the source for Christian heresies before Noetus in Philaster's Catalogue of heresies.

When Zeus struck down Apollo's son Asclepius with a lightning bolt for resurrecting Hippolytus from the dead ( transgressing Themis by stealing Hades's subjects ), Apollo in revenge killed the Cyclopes, who had fashioned the bolt for Zeus.

Bart D. Ehrman referred to a work by an early anonymous Christian writer ( perhaps Hippolytus, a Christian leader in Rome around 200 AD ) who in a commentary on the Old Testament book Song of Songs, wrote that Jesus first appeared to the women at the tomb.

His contemporary and enemy, the author of Philosophumena ( probably Hippolytus of Rome ), relates that Callixtus, as a young slave, was put in charge of collected funds by his master Carpophorus, funds which were given as alms by other Christians for the care of widows and orphans ; Callixtus lost the funds and fled from Rome, but was caught near Portus.

Some believe that Hippolytus ' account is of a later, more developed form of Simonianism, and that the original doctrines of the group were simpler, close to the account given by Justin Martyr and Irenaeus ( this account however is also included in Hippolytus ' work ).

Hippolytus says the free love doctrine was held by them in its purest form, and speaks in language similar to that of Irenaeus about the variety of magic arts practiced by the Simonians, and also of their having images of Simon and Helen under the forms of Zeus and Athena.

The earliest attested Christian interpretation of the Song is found in an influential commentary by Hippolytus.

While these two were still in their infancy, Phaedra fell in love with Hippolytus, Theseus's son by Hippolyta.

An exception is found in Hippolytus of Rome, who in his work On the Seventy Apostles, distinguishes Mark the Evangelist ( 2 Tim 4: 11 ), John Mark ( Acts 12: 12, 25 ; 13: 5, 13 ; 15: 37 ), and Mark the cousin of Barnabas ( Col 4: 10 ; Phlm 24 ).

Adonis was killed by a wild boar, said to have been sent vicariously by Artemis, jealous of Adonis ' hunting skills or in retaliation for Aphrodite instigating the death of Hippolytus, a favorite of the huntress goddess ; or by Aphrodite's paramour, Ares, who was jealous of Aphrodite's love for Adonis ; or by Apollo, to punish Aphrodite for blinding his son, Erymanthus.

In a third version, Phaedra simply told Theseus this and did not kill herself ; Dionysus sent a wild bull which terrified Hippolytus ' horses.

The Early Church Fathers also predicted a future Great Apostasy in the Church, for example Hippolytus: " And the churches too will wail with a mighty lamentation, because neither oblation nor incense is attended to, nor a service acceptable to God ; but the sanctuaries of the churches will become like a garden-watcher's hut, and the Holy Body and Blood of Christ will not be shown in those days.

Hippolytus furthermore stated that the ark floated to and fro in the four directions on the waters, making the sign of the cross, before eventually landing on Mount Kardu " in the east, in the land of the sons of Raban, and the Orientals call it Mount Godash ; the Armenians call it Ararat ".

In 1836, some relics that were exhumed from the catacombs of Saint Hippolytus on the Via Tiburtina, then near ( rather than inside ) Rome, were identified with St Valentine ; placed in a casket, and transported to the procession to the high altar for a special Mass dedicated to young people and all those in love.

§ 7 ), and a closer examination shows that this is no chance coincidence, and that Monoimus is really to be referred to that sect, although Hippolytus himself has classed them separately ; for Monoimus describes his first principle as bisexual, and applies to it the titles " Father, Mother, the two immortal names ," words taken out of a Naassene hymn.

Further traces of the obligations of Monoimus to Simon are found in the reference to the six powers instrumental in creation, which answer to Simon's six " roots ," while a similar indebtedness to Simon on the part of the Naassene writer in Hippolytus is found on comparing the anatomical speculations connected with the name Eden ( v. 9 ; vi.

Carpocrates is also mentioned by Tertullian and Hippolytus, both of whom seem to rely on Irenaeus ; and also perhaps by Origen and Hegesippus.

Most of the texts had been printed previously, from 1559 onward ; but Newton's version of Thebais is new, and earlier printed texts of Studley's versions of Hercules Oetaeus and Hippolytus, if they ever existed, have not survived.
