The author opens with a prologue, usually taken to be addressed to an individual by the name of Theophilus ( though this name, which translates literally as " God-lover ", may be a nickname rather than a personal appellation ) and references " my earlier book "— almost certainly the Gospel of Luke.

Another book using that same title, the " Gospel of Barnabas ", survives in two post-medieval manuscripts in Italian and Spanish.

The Gospel According to Matthew (, to euangelion kata Matthaion ) ( Gospel of Matthew or simply Matthew ) is one of the four canonical gospels, one of the three synoptic gospels, and the first book of the New Testament.

In Insular Gospel Books ( copies of the Gospels produced in Ireland and Britain under Celtic Christianity ), the first verse of Matthew's genealogy of Christ was often treated in a decorative manner, as it began not only a new book of the Bible, but was the first verse in the Gospels.
