Arnulf was, according to most sources, the illegitimate son of Carloman, King of Bavaria, and his concubine Liutswind, perhaps of Carantanian origin, and possibly the sister of Ernst, Count of the Bavarian Nordgau Margraviate in the area of the Upper Palatinate, or perhaps the burgrave of Passau, as some sources say.

As it is mainly West-Franconian historiography that speaks of Arnulf's illegitimacy, it is quite feasible that the two females are one and the same person and that Carloman later on actually married Liutswind, thus legitimizing his son.

The initial grant for the abbey was signed by Carloman, the son of Charles Martel, and a supporter of Boniface's reform efforts in the Frankish church.

A flourishing period of Monte Cassino followed its re-establishment in 718 by Abbot Petronax, when among the monks were Carloman, son of Charles Martel ; Ratchis, predecessor of the great Lombard Duke and King Aistulf ; and Paul the Deacon, the historian of the Lombards.

Carloman () ( 830 – 29 September 880 ) was the eldest son of Louis the German, king of East Francia ( Germany ), and Hemma, daughter of the count Welf.

Carloman ( between 706 and 716 – 17 August 754 ) was the eldest son of Charles Martel, major domo or mayor of the palace and duke of the Franks, and his wife Chrotrud.

Carloman left Monte Cassino to visit his brother to ask him not to march on Italy ( and possibly to drum up support for his son Drogo ).

Despite their difficult relationship, and the events following Carloman's death, Charlemagne would later name his second legitimate son ' Carloman ' after his deceased brother.

Carloman II ( c. 866 – 12 December 884 ), King of Western Francia, was the youngest son of King Louis the Stammerer and Ansgarde of Burgundy, and became king, jointly with his brother Louis III of France, on his father's death in 879.

Desiderius remained in Pavia, but Adelchis, his son, had left to stronger Verona to guard over the family of Carloman.

Returning to northern Italy, he died, near Ghedi, in what is now the province of Brescia, on August 12, 875, and was buried in the church of Basilica of Sant ' Ambrogio at Milan, having named as his successor in Italy his cousin Carloman, son of Louis the German.
