Hmar is the name of one of the numerous Mizo / Kuki / Chin tribes of India, spread over a large area in the northeast.

The Hmar People's Convention-Democracy is an armed insurgency group formed in 1995 to create an independent Hmar State in North East India.

It is the offspring of the Hmar People's Convention ( HPC ), which entered into agreement with the Government of Mizoram in 1994 resulting in the formation of Sinlung Hills Development Council ( SHDC ) in North Mizoram.

There is no homegenous settlement of Hmar speakers alone.

The Hmar language belongs to the Kukish branch of the Tibeto-Burman family of languages.

Hmar speakers are scattered over a vast area in Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Chittagong Hill tracts, and NC Hills and Cachar districts of Assam state, India.

Board of Secondary Education, Assam has also included Hmar as an MIL in its matriculation syllabus from 2005.

Their recruited cadres are from the States where the Hmar people are spread-Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghaaya.

There are also ten of thousands of Chin people in Mizoram State, India, mainly in the area of the Lai Autonomous District Council, formerly part of Chhimtuipui District, and a sizable population also live in Churachandpur district of Manipur, consisting of smaller tribes like the Hmar, Paite, Simte, Zou, Gangte and others.

Literally, Hmar means North or Northern people, as they are living north to the Lusei people.

Other clans or ethnic people in this group are the Thadou ( Kuki ), Hmar, Lushai ( Mizo ), Paite, Simte, Vaiphei, and Zou.

Pu Dr. V. Lunghnema wrote the Genealogy of the Hmar tribes, a branch of the Zo family, and he identified Zo as the ancestor of the Hmar clan.

The R-Group includes Lushai, Hmar, Lakher, Pawi and all the so-called Old Kukis like Kom, Anal, Chiru which have R-sound and are closer to the Lushai or Hmar dialects.
