Returning to civilian life, Hobhouse took to farming on a family estate in Somerset.

The biggest critic of the camps was the Englishwoman, humanitarian, and welfare worker Emily Hobhouse.

He helped found academic sociology in the United Kingdom, becoming the first professor of sociology ( with Leonard Trelawny Hobhouse ) in 1907 in the University of London.

The existence of the concentration camps was exposed by Emily Hobhouse, who toured the camps and began petitioning the British government to change its policy.

The British later perceived the concentration camps as a humanitarian measure, to care for displaced persons until the war was ended, in response to the Hobhouse and Fawcett reports.
