Holbein and probably
We are not told under whom Herlen laboured in the Netherlands, but he probably took the same course as Schöngauer and Hans Holbein the Elder, who studied in the school of van der Weyden.
Later editions added other designs cut by others, probably not all by Holbein.
Holbein painted a portrait of him, c. 1522-23, probably as a pair with one of Erasmus ; the original has not survived but a number of copies have.
