* 1666 – Second Anglo-Dutch War: Rear Admiral Robert Holmes leads a raid on the Dutch island of Terschelling, destroying 150 merchant ships, an act later known as " Holmes's Bonfire ".

The main difference between Ja ' far in " The Three Apples " and later fictional detectives such as Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, however, is that Ja ' far has no actual desire to solve the case.

Publication of Holmes ' follow-up novel, Red Axe of Pellucidar, reportedly ready for print in 1980, was supposedly blocked by the estate, and only saw print much later in a limited private edition.

Holmes is still believed by the public to be deceased following the events of The Final Problem, although it is revealed in the second volume that Mina later meets with him.

Although Moriarty appeared in only two of the 60 Sherlock Holmes tales by Conan Doyle, Holmes ' attitude to him has gained him the popular impression of being Holmes ' arch-nemesis – as " The Final Problem " clearly states: " Holmes spent months in a private war against Moriarty's criminal operations " – and he has been frequently used in later stories by other authors, parodies, and in other media.

The time when Holmes began his career in porn is difficult to determine because of several different and conflicting stories that he later gave due to the illegal nature of it at the time.

The most plausible story is what his wife, Sharon, later told interviewers is that in 1967, while currently unemployed and recovering from his collapsed lung ailment, Holmes would attend a men's card playing club which was called the Poker Palace, located in Gardena, California, a few evenings a week to play cards with a few friends where a photographer, standing next to Holmes at a men's room urinal, saw his unusually large penis size and then gave him his business card with an offer to pose in still photographs.

Stevens said that two years later in 1967 he hired Holmes and Dempsey to appear in one of the first series of hardcore loops for mail order in the United States produced by Stevens and Terrie.

Retired LAPD Detective, Tom Lang, later talked about becoming Holmes ' undercover contact and handler while Lang was working as a vice squad officer during the 1970s and explained in the 1998 documentary Wadd: The Life and Times of John C. Holmes about working with Holmes and how Holmes would contact him with information about the underground porn industry as well as give him the names of various actors, actresses, directors and the financiers of the porn films and when they would be filmed.

( Holmes later joked to psychologist Dr. Vonda L. Pelto, who had counselled Holmes in 1982 and other notorious inmates during her employment at L. A. County jail, that he was exaggerating the number — which was actually 13, 895.

Both his first wife, Sharon, as well as Bill Amerson, separately confirmed later that Holmes could not have contracted HIV from intravenous drug use because he never used needles.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories featuring Holmes, and all but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend, assistant, and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson.

Early in his career he worked as an illustrator for magazines like the Boy's Own Paper and Judy, drew comic strips, including the Sherlock Holmes parody " Chubb-Lock Homes " for Comic Cuts, and wrote articles for Punch under the pseudonym " W. Bird ".

Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes wrote the Warriors series under the pseudonym of Erin Hunter to keep their readers from searching all over the library for their books.

While some people consider the inclusion of jelly to be a recent variation, the earliest known recipe to include jelly dates from 1747, and the poet Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote of trifles containing jelly in 1861.

An earlier proponent of this sort of fiction was William S. Baring-Gould, who wrote a fictional biography of Sherlock Holmes.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a short story about his celebrated sleuth Sherlock Holmes which features a fingerprint: The Norwood Builder is a 1903 Sherlock Holmes short story set in 1894 and involves the discovery of a bloody fingerprint which helps Holmes to expose the real criminal and free his client.

Holmes years later wrote, in Ken's autobiography, of his experience that this was his own toughest match in over 70 contests.

Hardwick also wrote many books and plays based around the Sherlock Holmes novels.

The year marked several publications on the literarily influential Boer Wars: Winston Churchill, the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and a major Allied political figure in World War II penned a memoir, Ian Hamilton's March, describing his experiences accompanying the British army during the Second Boer War, and Arthur Conan Doyle ( famous as the creator of Sherlock Holmes ) wrote on the subject in his The Great Boer War.

Out of enthusiasm for the Sherlock Holmes stories, he helped to found the Baker Street Irregulars and wrote the introduction to the standard omnibus edition of The Complete Sherlock Holmes.

Doug and Duane wrote a song called " What About Love ". Terry Bozzio replaced Ward as drummer for 1998's Zoom album, and David Henderson ( as " Holmes Jones ") took over on drums for 2001's Normal as the Next Guy and Live at the Rock N Roll Funhouse albums.

In 1907 Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote the " main purpose " of the First Amendment " was " to prevent all such previous restraints upon publications as had been practiced by other governments.

His modern biographer Richard Holmes wrote that “ he remains … a discredited man ” but “ history has dealt too harshly ” with him.

* British writer Colin Dexter, author of the Inspector Morse series of books, wrote a Sherlock Holmes short story " A Case of Mis-Identity ", part of a collection of short stories published under the title " Morse's Greatest Mystery ", in which Watson's practical knowledge of the circumstances of a case outwits the armchair intellectual logic of both Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes.

) The best-known form of this hypothesis — popularised by William S. Baring-Gould, who wrote " biographies " of both Sherlock Holmes and Nero Wolfe — holds that Wolfe is the offspring of Sherlock and Irene Adler.

However, a subsequent essay by Zechariah Chafee titled “ Freedom of Speech in War Time ” argued despite context that Holmes had intended to substitute clear and present danger for the bad-tendency standard a more protective standard of free speech.

" The Final Problem " was intended to be exactly what its title says ; Doyle sought to sweeten the pill by letting Holmes go in a blaze of glory, having rid the world of a criminal so powerful and dangerous any further task would be trivial in comparison ( as Holmes says in the story itself ).

In giving Moriarty this trait, which had already appeared in both Sherlock Holmes and the detective's brother Mycroft, Doyle may have intended to portray Moriarty as a man having an intellect equal or greater than that of Holmes, and thus the only man capable of defeating him.

After the repression following the Red Scare, and general disillusion with the war, Holmes sought to prop up free speech with the " clear and present danger " test, a standard intended to clarify and narrow the circumstances in which speech could be restricted.

The 30-year-old King explained to Holmes that he intended to marry Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meningen, second daughter of the King of Scandinavia ; the marriage would be threatened if his prior relationship with Adler should come to light.

* Budleigh Salterton was mentioned in an episode of Granada Television's adaptation / dramatisation of the Sherlock Holmes story Charles Augustus Milverton ( aired under the title, " The Master Blackmailer ") as an intended honeymoon location.

* When Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Final Problem he fully intended to kill off Sherlock Holmes and write no further books and stories about him.

" Biddle also said that Holmes " refused to let his preferences ( other men were apt to call them convictions ) interfere with his judicial decisions ... The steadily held determination to keep his own views isolated from his professional work is aptly shown by his famous remark in the Lochner case-the Fourteenth Amendment does not enact Mr. Herbert Spencer's Social Statics ... Following graduation, Holmes intended to go into the legal profession, so he lived at home and studied at the Harvard Law School ( named Dane School at the time ).

* In the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes, when dabbling with occult sciences and sorcery during his investigation, Sherlock Holmes makes an allusion to both the White Rabbit and the rabbit-hole, comparing the sorcery to the rabbit-hole and himself to the white rabbit saying " Although I went deeper into the rabbit-hole than I intended, I brushed the dirt from my fluffy white tail and emerged enlightened ".

In the second chapter of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story The Valley of Fear, Holmes ' discussion of his enemy Professor Moriarty involves a Greuze painting, intended to illustrate Moriarty's wealth despite his small income.

The 1962 film Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace was intended to be an adaptation of The Valley of Fear, but only minor elements of the story remained in the final film.

The passage seems to have little to do with the mystery and seems mainly intended to let Holmes reach a new peak of his deductive powers.

Holmes finds a hiding place near Briarbrae to keep watch after having sent Watson and Phelps to London on the train, and also letting the occupants at Briarbrae believe that he intended to go with them, ostensibly to keep Phelps out of harm's way should the interloper come back.

Holmes explains that several clues all pointed to Joseph: the fact that the thief knew the ways of the office well, given that he had rung the bell before seeing the treaty, and that Phelps mentioned his relatives had been shown around ; the fact that Joseph had intended to stop in and see Phelps on his way home, and that the theft had been committed very soon before the train would depart for Woking ; that the thief had come in a cab, given that it was a rainy night but that there were no wet footprints in the passage ; and the fact that the burglar who tried to break into Phelps's room was familiar with the layout of the house.
