These were educated men, who, as Mr. Justice Holmes was fond of saying, formed their inductions out of experience under the burden of responsibility.

For his part Conan Doyle acknowledged basing his detective stories on the model of Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin, and his anonymous narrator, and basing his character Sherlock Holmes on Joseph Bell, who in his use of " ratiocination " prefigured Poirot's reliance on his " little grey cells ".

As early as Murder on the Links, where he still largely depends on clues, Poirot mocks a rival " bloodhound " detective who focuses on the traditional trail of clues that had been established in detective fiction by the example of Sherlock Holmes: footprints, fingerprints and cigar ash.

) This plot point was also used in a Sherlock Holmes story based on the Basil Rathbone era, where a friend of Dr. Watson's is a baronet who is due to receive his inheritance on the New Year's Day of the year where his twenty-first birthday will be celebrated, only for the law to deprive him of the money as he was born on February 29 ; with the 84-year-old Baronet distraught at the news that 1900 is not a leap year, Holmes helps the Baronet fake his death long enough for his grandson-who is the appropriate age to receive the inheritance-to establish his claim and receive the money himself.

Other characters are Gumby's dog Nopey whose entire vocabulary is the word " nope ", and Prickle, a yellow dinosaur who sometimes styles himself as a detective with pipe and deerstalker hat like Sherlock Holmes.

Huston plays a prison warden who wants to reform the conditions of the inmates and Holmes plays a wrongly convicted prisoner who learns about the " code " of not ratting on other inmates.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who once lived in Birmingham, may have borrowed Baskerville's surname for one of his Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles – which, in turn, was borrowed by Umberto Eco for the character William of Baskerville in his best-selling novel, The Name of the Rose ( Sean Connery played the character in the film based on the book ).

His mother, Ruth Hilda ( née Holmes ; 1916 – 1991 ), taught at an elementary school and was a liberal activist, while his father, Edmund Norwood Bacon ( May 2, 1910 – October 14, 2005 ), was a well-respected architect and a prominent Philadelphian who had been Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission for many years.

He was therefore mentioned in a stanza of the Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. poem, " At the Saturday Club ," where the author dreams he sees some of his friends who are no longer:

Gulacy was a film buff, and modeled many characters after film stars: Juliette on Marlene Dietrich, James Larner on Marlon Brando, Clive Reston ( often broadly hinted at as being the son of James Bond as well as the grand nephew of Sherlock Holmes ) occasionally looking like Basil Rathbone and Sean Connery, and a minor character Ward Sarsfield ( after the real-life name of Sax Rohmer ) who looked like David Niven.

As seen in the surviving episode " The Frighteners ", Steed also had helpers among the population who provided information, similar to the " Baker Street Irregulars " of Sherlock Holmes.

Norman Holmes Pearson, who worked for the Office of Strategic Studies in London during World War II, returned to Yale and headed the new American studies program, in which scholarship quickly became an instrument of promoting liberty.

When Galovitch falsely accuses Prewitt of insubordination, Holmes is about to punish Prewitt again until the man in charge of the detail says that it was Galovitch, not Prewitt, who was spoiling for the fight.

The first series of Sherlock Holmes adventures ends with Holmes and Moriarty grappling together on the edge of a cliff.

They graduated together from Atlanta's Turner High School, where Valedictorian Holmes was first in the class and Charlayne third.

Fans of the literary detective Sherlock Holmes are widely considered to have comprised the first modern fandom creating some of the first fan fiction as early as 1887 and holding public demonstrations of mourning after Holmes was " killed " off in 1893.

Prior to Doctor Who he appeared in numerous TV shows including, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, Dial 999, Danger Man, Maigret, Compact, The Third Man, Crane, Detective, Sherlock Holmes, No Hiding Place, The Saint, Armchair Theatre, The Wednesday Play, Z-Cars, Adam Adamant Lives!

He appeared in such plays as Vincent, Fiddler on the Roof, The Man in the Glass Booth, Oliver !, Six Rms Riv Vu, Full Circle, Camelot, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The King and I, Caligula, The Four Poster, Twelfth Night, Sherlock Holmes, Equus and My Fair Lady.

Although Moriarty appeared in only two of the 60 Sherlock Holmes tales by Conan Doyle, Holmes ' attitude to him has gained him the popular impression of being Holmes ' arch-nemesis – as " The Final Problem " clearly states: " Holmes spent months in a private war against Moriarty's criminal operations " – and he has been frequently used in later stories by other authors, parodies, and in other media.

Moriarty only appeared in one book because, quite simply, having him constantly escape would discredit Holmes, and would be less satisfying.

In giving Moriarty this trait, which had already appeared in both Sherlock Holmes and the detective's brother Mycroft, Doyle may have intended to portray Moriarty as a man having an intellect equal or greater than that of Holmes, and thus the only man capable of defeating him.

* Lionel Atwill appeared as Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon.

He also appeared as a hallucination in the Return of Sherlock Holmes episode " The Devil's Foot.

* A holodeck simulation of Professor Moriarty, played by actor Daniel Davis, appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes " Elementary, Dear Data " and " Ship in a Bottle ", accidentally achieving sentience when Geordi LaForge asks the holodeck to create an opponent able to defeat Data ( rather than Sherlock Holmes ).
