An enthusiastic educator, Holst became music master at St Paul's Girls ' School in 1905 and director of music at Morley College in 1907, continuing in both posts until retirement.

Holst's mother, Clara Cox von Holst ( née Lediard ), who died in 1882, was a singer and pianist who bore two sons, Gustav and Emil Gottfried ( who later became Ernest Cossart, a film actor in Hollywood ).

During these years Holst also became interested in Hindu mysticism and spirituality, and this interest led to the composition of several works set to translations of Sanskrit texts, including: Sita ( 1899 – 1906 ), a three-act opera based on an episode in the Ramayana ; Sāvitri ( 1908 ), a chamber opera based on a tale from the Mahabharata ; 4 groups of Hymns from the Rig Veda ( 1908 – 14 ); and two texts originally by Kalidasa: Two Eastern Pictures ( 1909 – 10 ) and The Cloud Messenger ( 1913 ).

In 1907, Holst also became director of music at Morley College.

Holst and wife Isobel bought a cottage in Thaxted, Essex and, surrounded by medieval buildings and ample rambling opportunities, he started work on the suite that became his best known work, the orchestral suite The Planets.

While living in Thaxted, Holst became friendly with Rev.

Holst became an occasional organist and choir master at Thaxted Parish Church and began an annual music festival at Whitsuntide in 1916, at which students from Morley College and St Paul's School performed.

The idea of the work was suggested to Holst by Clifford Bax, who introduced him to astrology when the two were part of a small group of English artists holidaying in Majorca in the spring of 1913 ; Holst became quite a devotee of the subject, and liked to cast his friends ' horoscopes for fun.

Holst then scored the suite for a large orchestra, and it was in this incarnation that it became enormously popular.

Later in the mid-80s, the Laibach sound became more richly layered with samples from classical music including from Gustav Holst ’ s The Planets.

Benjamin Zander took lessons with Benjamin Britten and became a student of theory of Britten ’ s amanuensis and assistant, Imogen Holst, daughter of composer Gustav Holst.

He spent three years as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, under Sir Frederick Bridge, and then went to the Royal College of Music in 1893, where he became acquainted with Gustav Holst, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, William Hurlstone, Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Ireland.

Contrary to what is also sometimes said, Holst was not a pacifist but wanted to enlist as his friend Vaughan Williams did, but he was rejected as unfit: he suffered neuritis in his right arm — something that caused him to seek help from several amanuenses in scoring The Planets.

Gustav Theodore Holst ( born Gustavus Theodore von Holst, 21 September 187425 May 1934 ) was an English composer.

The combined influence of Ravel, Hindu spiritualism and English folk tunes enabled Holst to free himself of the influence of Wagner and Strauss and to forge his own style.

Vaughan Williams's own music was in general quite different from Holst ’ s, but he praised Holst's work abundantly and the two men developed a shared interest in exploring and maintaining the English vocal and choral tradition as found primarily in folk song, madrigals and church music.

To make these translations from Sanskrit to English, Holst enrolled at University College London ( UCL ) to study the language as a ' non-matriculated ' student.

Stylistically his music was significantly different from the mainstream English school of the middle 20th century ; instead of following in the lyrical, folk-song influenced tradition of Holst, Vaughan Williams and others, he wrote music which was chromatic, contrapuntal, and acerbic — more akin to Schoenberg, Bartók, and Hindemith than to any of his English contemporaries.

Some of Sharp's collections formed the basis for Songs of the West ( with Sabine Baring-Gould ) and Somerset Rhapsody by Gustav Holst and the " March from Somerset " in Vaughan Williams ' English Folk Song Suite.

Indeed, a factor contributing to Milford's depression was that his brand of English music, as handed down from Vaughan Williams and Holst, was going out of fashion, and his music was not appreciated in a musical scene which was increasingly modernist even while Milford's own music was becoming more conservative.

A third progressive-rock band, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, performed an arrangement of " Jupiter " with lyrics which they entitled " Joybringer ". Black Metal / Viking Metal band Bathory arranged a section of " Jupiter " as the melody of the song " Hammerheart ", from the album Twilight of the Gods.
