After Homer leaves the orphanage, so does she in an effort to find him.

Meanwhile, Homer and Bart are plunged into a raging river where they lose their clothes, forcing them to cover themselves with leaves and mud.

He makes a point of maintaining an emotional distance from the orphans, so that they can more easily make the transition into an adoptive family, but when it becomes clear that Homer is going to spend his entire childhood at the orphanage, Wilbur trains the orphan as an obstetrician and then comes to love him.

Homer decides to return to the orphanage after the death of Dr. Larch, to work as the new director.

A subplot follows the character Melony, who grew up alongside Homer in the orphanage.

She is the catalyst that transforms Homer from his comfortable but not entirely admirable position at the apple orchard to becoming Dr. Larch's replacement at the orphanage.

Hibbert also bears a striking resemblance to the director of the Shelbyville orphanage, who mentions a personal quest to find his long-lost twin to an indifferent Homer.

Determined to find his brother, Homer and his family go to the orphanage and find out that Grampa's love child was adopted by a Mr. and Mrs. Powell and named Herbert.

In Homer, Aphrodite, venturing into battle to protect her son, Aeneas, is wounded by Diomedes and returns to her mother, to sink down at her knee and be comforted.

Bob briefly returns in the season 20 episode " Wedding for Disaster ", when Bart and Lisa initially suspect Bob of kidnapping Homer to prevent him from attending his second wedding with Marge ( due to a keychain they found had an ' S ' and a ' B '), but Krusty provides him with an alibi, explaining to the kids that Bob was with him the whole day.
