* 1886 – William Ewart Gladstone introduces the first Irish Home Rule Bill into the British House of Commons.

The Rule of St. Benedict was promoted by various rulers of France, especially the House of Capet.

In the 1885 general election this party won the balance of power in the House of Commons, and demanded Irish Home Rule as the price of support for a continued Gladstone ministry.

There was a final weak Gladstone ministry in 1892, but it also was dependent on Irish support and failed to get Irish Home Rule through the House of Lords.

The First Home Rule Bill of 1886 was defeated in the House of Commons, while the Second Home Rule Bill of 1893 was passed by the Commons but rejected by the House of Lords.
